FAQ - Referee Questions

Player Knowledge

This is also referred to as Meta Gaming knowledge by some people.

The participants in this Dragonslayers Space campaign do not need to know anything about the Traveller Universe. That is the Referee's (BOB's) responsibility to take the many decades of previously published background information and bring it to life for the Travellers. We welcome new players who have never used the Traveller 2nd Edition ruleset before. The only requirement to be part of this game is to be creative.

That is great, you will have some insight into potential Library Entries and probably have some ideas about the major Sophonts in Charted Space. That knowledge can be helpful if shared with others as "I have an intuition that X might be a factor here" and the group can build off of that to see if it is in fact accurate. It is always difficult to predict the future, especially when you are creating it.

*What if I know lots of spoilers about a System or a plot line?

It is hard to not let Player Knowledge seep in sometimes. We prefer to not let others know details of a plot line you think is happening because you played in that scenario before, or read a novel that takes place on a certain System. Knowing that information is fine. As always be aware that BOB likes to take "everyone knows" and twist it to be something just a little bit different.

Remember: Stepping Stone III is where the OTU {Original Traveller Universe} becomes the DTU {Dragonslayer Traveller Universe}. Also referred to MTU {My Traveller Universe}. This is the point where what the Travellers do as they interact with the universe creates the changes from any official/original history or lore that has been published. This is where it becomes OUR campaign that we all create and build together. Any Player Knowledge that someone brings to the campaign is appreciated.

Player Knowledge is how we refer to what the Travellers brings to the game from their experience in playing previous to joining us. This might be a deeper understanding of Charted Space, knowledge of how typical Sophonts interact, etc.

In Character {IC} knowledge is what the Travellers learns in game directly. This can be from experiences while roleplaying, reading and researching, having conversations here on the site with other Travellers, etc. It is preferred if a Traveller want to be sure the other players know this that it is communicated at least in brief here on the site. Sometimes that might be roleplay, sometimes it might be a link to what might be common knowledge that is shared on Fantasy Grounds.

Out of Character {OOC} knowledge is much like Player Knowledge but with a small addition. Because everything we do in the campaign is here on the site events play out in one system, or on a ship that only a couple of the Travellers are involved in. Things might be said, adventures explored, etc. that the other Travellers in the campaign will not have any knowledge of until they meet up again in person or by messaging that those things happened. This does not mean the Player is hiding something from anyone just that it is rare that everything about what someone does is shared fully with others. For the instances that a Traveller wants to share fully about an encounter or experience an easy way is a quick summary with a link to the calendar page to indicate telling the story without having to type or copy that to the new page.

With many different Travellers interacting across this campaign it can be seen as reading other 'in universe' stories, especially for those times that the direct interactions are few and far between.
