08:30 Captain's Office
After a few days of coffee preparations, and working diligently to fit in to the flow of the ship Rao finds a time to informally chat with the Captain. She's learned her routine by this point, as much as she has one, and seeks out a point in her day where she is typically alone, but in a more public space than her cabin. She offers a small snack, something that fits with the kinds of things she's noted the Captain eating as an ice-breaker. "I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for allowing me to tag along on the ride to Asim. I hope you feel I've been of some small benefit to the ship. At least enough to cover the cost of my passage."
10:30 Med Bay
Rao drops by the Med Bay to visit Mikhel. She is carrying two large cups with milkshakes inside. "Hi. Are you busy? I've been trying some new blends and I always like to have a taste tester when possible. My taste buds are not human, and while I think I have a pretty good grip on what is palatable to most races I prefer to confirm. This one is an Asim fruit similar to a banana called su’ikhrao, mixed with chocolate. I'd love to know your thoughts if you are willing to be my guinea pig. Might also give us a chance to discuss your questions about the Aslan on Asim." She passes him one of the cups. "I'm sure you know that Aslan are carnivorous, so they imported herd animals back in the earliest days on the planet. Those Aslan not having grown up on Asim have great disdain for fruits and vegetables, so a garden planet was somewhat problematic for them. Naturally those few of us "native" to Asim have a slightly broader view. We take supplements that allow us to better process vegetation, and I personally love the greater variety of textures and flavors afforded by including such."
Mikhel takes a sniff, and a small sip. The flavour is good, if one has an affinity for chocolate, but the fruit gives a peculiar taste and texture about which Mikhel isn't sure. He gives it some time. Another small sip. It isn't bad.
It is different. Perhaps, a bit of conversation, and small sips, and it will grow on him.
"This is different. Let me ponder it a bit." Mikhel places it on a desk, and pulls up another chair, indicating that Rao should make herself comfortable.
"I have gone over your scan, and consulted others for nuances. Nothing of concern jumped out. You appear to be in very good health. However, I'm interested in how Aslan deal with Asim, and any things that could be harmful to Sophonts of all types." Something jumped out of Mikhel's memory.
"What type of herd animals were brought to Asim? Would Humans tolerate the proteins? If I'm not mistaken, there is a desire for more meat in the diet of the Floating Palace. Is that something you noticed?"
"The tides of Asim can be hazardous to anyone or anything that is not prepared for them. They are massive and incredibly powerful, approximately 3x as much as Earth tides. The light of my homeworld is quite blue, so if a sophont needs light of a more yellow or red tone that might be a problem? I am unaware of any for whom this is the case, but then such is not my field of expertise. The equatorial region is entirely desert, and as such little sparse in population and somewhat dangerous to the unprepared."
"I'm glad to hear that I'm in good health as far as you can identify. I certainly feel myself to be so. As far as Aslan on Asim, we are but a small percentage of the population remaining after the war. As I mentioned I take supplements to aid in digesting a far higher percentage of vegetation that my biology is built for. I'm happy to let you examine them if that would be helpful. The deserts are more hazardous to us than even the humans, as you can imagine. Fur and desert heat is not a great mix."
"Two kinds of animals were introduced by the Aslan and have thrived on Asim: Shii and Ka'ah'ii. The shii and small scavengers, a bit like what you might call a monkey? They eat everything, and are wonderful at managing waste. They are delicious. On the opposite end of the spectrum are the Ka'ah'ii. They are herd beasts, large and slow moving. They have a relatively tough hide, but eat vegetation such as grasses. They do not provide good hunting (Aslan must travel to other worlds for that), but are relatively efficient grazers who can provide large amounts of meat. I could not possible have missed that the Floating Palace is scarce in meat. It was often remarked upon to me, and made my reliance upon the supplements even more requisite. Certainly meat from these animals could be shipped to Drinax for use on the Floating Palace, but that would require a trade off, as animals are almost always less efficient users of resources than plantlife. If they are concerned about caloric intake that is something to consider."
