Overview:
Drinaxian local only child of minor noble. Named Maxvar they were teased relentlessly calling him "Max Bazaar" which added a layer of resilience to his character and set him to thinking about how he could better his antagonists. They abandoned their birth name and, with their mother's agreement, adopted the family name. They are the last Kalidaren.
They studied hard and had much success with their natural intellect. They were drawn to a great variety of subjects both theoretical and practical, mostly skills that would facilitate or understand better travel among the stars.
As they grew older they had many exciting opportunities: University, Scout, Scholar, finally finding their calling as a travelling merchant and broker. They tapped into the potential of the Outrim Void and facilitated business dealings with a myriad of clients from ordinary folk in high or low ports, through to execs from Vilani or Aslan corporations.
Physical Description:
Personality:
Allies:
University fellow Dr. Elara Vos, a Sociologist and former Progressive Starfarers Union Leader
Former Lover Captain Lyra Renik, Scout Surveyor.
Enemies:
Kendrik Yural, Industrialist Head of Yural Conglomerate.
Early Years:
Born in the Floating Palace on Drinax, Kalidaren was a quick learning child whose intellect brought him to the Scholar's tower for early studies. Their mother, Lady Nyvara Kalidaren, a minor Drinaxian noble, desired for Kalidaren's education to be with the Imperium, and so had them billeted in Hradus, many parsecs distant from their home.
Term 1 (University - Hradus)[+1 Ally +1 Enemy]:
At University on Hradus, Kalidaren became a prominent figure in the Progressive Starfarers Union (PSU) on advocating for equitable access to advanced technologies. Their rise earned them an Ally, Dr. Elara Vos, a brilliant sociologist and PSU leader. However, their ideals clashed with industrialist Kendrik Yural, head of the Yural Conglomerate (later subsidiary of GeDeCo), who became a lifelong Enemy.
Term 2 (Scout Surveyor - Tobia Subsector)[+1 Ally]:
While mapping uncharted systems in the Tobia Subsector, Kalidaren met Captain Lyra Renik, a fellow Scout Surveyor. They formed a deep romantic relationship, making Lyra a trusted Ally.
Term 3 (Scout Explorer - Tobia/Borderlands Subsectors):
During a mission in the Umemii Sector, Kalidaren rescued stranded miners from a failing asteroid station, the heroic act gaining them widespread respect among Scouts.
Term 4 (Scholar Scientist - Tobia/Borderlands Subsectors):
Recruited under contract by Sternmetal Horizons, Kalidaren worked on gravimetric efficiency in Cordan. They led a study analysing local gravitational anomalies and their impact on manoeuvre drive performance. By mapping optimal in-system trade routes and modifying Sternmetal’s drive tuning protocols, Kalidaren reduced fuel costs for grain transports, significantly improving profit margins for both Cordan’s exporters and Sternmetal’s logistics division.
Terms 5, 6, and 7 (Merchant Broker - Tobia/Borderlands/Tlaiowaha/Sindal Subsectors):
Having seen the potential for mercantile pursuits in the Trojan Reach, Kalidaren decided to go into business for themself, establishing Kalidaren Starfarers.
Connection with Cal Cooper
Connection Skill - Admin
(From discord - Niyaga: In this term, Kalidaren established "Kalidaren Starfarers" and was sourcing everything a starfarer might need, from fuel, ship's parts (he's an Engineer, right?), and possibly ammunition (missiles with serial numbers scrubbed?) through to foodstuffs/delicacies/luxuries not easily sourced in the Void, drugs (read "medicines") and equipment. Buying and selling.
In short, what did Cal wanna buy or source through the broker in that period '92 to '99?
That might be the most straightforward connection that we might elaborate on over time. Like all tall tales, it might get larger and larger until no-one remembers what actually happened
AlexB (Cal Cooper): In the '92 to '95 term, Cal did a job where he stole a cargo load of implants. His previous fence had disappeared; he would have been looking for a new one. If Kalidaren wasn't too keen on knowing where they came from . . .
Especially if he could have hooked Cal up with a discrete doc at the time (Cal kept one of the implants for his own use - something he takes considerable pains to keep secret).
First Draft - Connection with Cal Cooper
Kalidaren and Cal Cooper’s paths crossed on Tanith in the Borderlands Subsector during Kalidaren’s merchant term in 1095. Operating under his burgeoning "Kalidaren Starfarers" brand, Kalidaren had gained a reputation as a broker for everything from rare ship parts and luxury provisions to less conventional goods best left unexamined. When Cal arrived on Tanith with a stolen shipment of high-grade implants but no reliable buyer, his usual fence having disappeared, Kalidaren saw an opportunity. With no questions asked, they negotiated a deal to offload the implants through their network.
By chance, a renowned but reclusive cybernetic surgeon, Dr. Elvyn Morvax, was in transit through Tanith, laying low after a controversial ethics scandal. Kalidaren, ever resourceful, introduced Cal to Dr. Morvax, who agreed to install one of the implants in exchange for a tidy fee and no paperwork. Before parting ways, Cal swore Kalidaren to secrecy about the implant. Kalidaren honoured their word, and along with the shared shady dealings has now, upon meeting again, become a mutual trust.
Over time, the story of their meeting grows with embellishment; Kalidaren claiming to have bartered a mid-spaceport standoff between Imperial Marines, while Cal spins tales of evading bounty hunters with a fortune before losing it gambling.
Term 6 - First Deal: Combining a trade visit with their mother, they secured rare tech from Drinax and shipped it to Techworld, earning significant profits.
Term 7 - Second Deal: Negotiated an exclusive spice trade deal with the Aslan corporation x...
