The crew of the Pioneer starts their day

1104-344 6:30

(Crockett arrives early this day it appears for morning coffee in the galley...as the others gather he says to all:) "Morning all....guess this is your meeting Captain so wondering if my proposed agenda for topics has helped you at all?"

List reads as follows: Agenda (proposed) for discussions...

Captain to address....

  1. Pioneer Operating Budget... The Pioneer is running an ongoing monthly deficit and appears to have been doing so for some time....Does she want help with it?
    1. If answer is 'YES' can we jointly understand how much debt she is in and to whom does she owe the debt?
    2. Ideas from group (if we are jointly trying to help her) on a plan to reduce the debt ....if this is, in fact, a potential issue for the ship? [d] Which crew member would Captain like to
    3. have look after the ship's accounts? -- Sultana can continue to do this or pass over to Crockett?
  2. SHIP SECURITY (not including current passengers or NICOLA)....[] between here and Drinax
  3. Meals....who is preparing?
  4. Contract for Crockett, who for one, answered the adv't from GeDeCo but ended up on the Pioneer awaiting a shuttle service to the Marduk downport--there was never terms discussed, as there was no one on board Pioneer to even greet him...Mikhel came aboard earlier and looks like in his background postings did reference that there was a contract of sorts back when he first joined Pioneer...but that seems to really need to be put in writing now.

Wanting to get this over with quick so she could get back to her work, Athena gave a nod to the others as they joined and motioned to the meeting agenda they all should have recieved. Without pause, once it seemed everyone mostly settled, she began:

"To the point. The ship operates on a shoestring budget. We are not losing money, but we are currently not bringing in the grants needed to do more hence why I answered the summons you all answered. You have your reasons, but that is mine. I will accept any suggestions to improve budget. If you want more detailed accounting, you will have to ask the one handling that."

"Without our previous Steward, it seems meals are currently being handled by whoever has free time. As of right now, that is our temporary Steward, Lieutenant Sultana. If he wishes to have someone else handle it, he may seek out the help."

"As for you, Crockett, you should have received a contract to look over. I'll make sure it gets sent to you if that was overlooked due to our... predicament with the pirates. I have someone who can handle any negotiations you wish for that as well. I give final approval, but it is below me to deal with the tedious paperwork involved."

Turning to Mikhel, she continued, "And for your inquire yesterday, yes, I approve whatever inspections you deem necessary. Passengers are a hassle, but they provide income when needed. You may enlist what crew you need to get that done." "Any other questions or matters to be resolved currently?"

"So I'll start Captain if I might....On Agenda item 1...the budget...As both my parents were corporate types I do have a head for budgets, revenue sources, cash flow, banking and while not formally recognized for those skills in a professional way...I could perhaps come up with some thoughts...but you're the Captain of this vessel and I gather you basically are the major shareholder...it's up to you....You have to want that help...and you don't seem overly concerned about your situation...just saying...So is our input really wanted on this on does your man Sultana here have it all under control....?

"Please feel free to add your input, Crockett. If you wish to take it over, you have my approval."

"Sorry Captain...I think Lt. Sultana currently has been doing a workup on the financial situation and I don't want to seem to be challenging that....For one I'm available to offer some thoughts as others might be as well...but you need to clearly ask for it.....To me it's basic financial science....When monthly expenses significantly are higher than monthly projected revenue the Pioneer IS losing money....and from my personal interest in remaining on board this vessel should we undertake a mission on behalf of the King in Drinax I'd want a bit more security of knowing I was aboard a vessel that had it's financial act together.....Perhaps Lt. Sultana could give us his view of where the Pioneer is financially?

Sultana carefully aligns his commpad on the table in front of him. "I was just running a few numbers out of curiosity, as I've never had this much access to a Labratory Ship before. It's been a fascinating study. The monthly expenses are much higher than I expected. The ship's *current* finances should be alright, if only barely and temporarily so, due to the cargo we unloaded at Marduk. The Pioneer's percentage of that should cover a couple of months' expenses. Unless there are overdue payments I don't know about. We can check at Torpol and see if we might be able to pick up another load of cargo to take to Drinax. I've been doing some research on trade routes and methods, and it looks like common industrial and manufactured goods are in demand on Drinax, and Torpol typically has them for sale. We might be able to fill the Suraksha's hold and thus add a bit more of a buffer to the Pioneer's account. My numbers aren't quite publishable yet, I need to massage the format a bit more to make them easily understandable. I'm not an accountant though, so feel free to look for mistakes."

"Outstanding work there Lieutenant! As long as its fine with the Captain I'll be most interested in looking at your "publishable" numbers. And, I agree with Sultana there....of course another cargo assignment out of Torpol will help a great deal...However...once we see your numbers Sultana...(and if it is the Captain's wish) I think we need the Pioneer needs to get a bit more serious about reducing current overhead and what is currently being considered as "fixed" cost of operations....again...just saying...but that's my observation so far.....I'll repeat again...I like what I see so far of Sultana's work...."

"As far as budgets go, and the financial running of a ship, I have no clue. I was always the worker bee, never the queen. So, yes, I can recall my supervisors bitching about the 'consumables' I used to treat troops in the field, but I used what was needed to save lives, or improvised. Never did I worry about how much it cost. However, I found out how much my toys cost when I left the Marines, and needed gear to practice my profession. Going forward, I am hoping the ship can cover the expenses for running the Med Bay. At this point, it is well stocked and equipped, and ready to deal with foreseeable issues.". Mikhel paused.

"To date, for the Captain's and crew's information, I have been implementing Imperial standards of inspection, and I have, over the last two months, been inspecting all the spaces on the ship, where allowed, by casually walking around, acting like a tourist with the crew. I've actually poked my nose in a bunch of places I didn't expect to get into, because I acted like I was interested in the medical aspects of the research. What is needed for regulations is the documentation, and formal recording of the inspections. A bit of documentation explaining that there are standards, Imperium, if desired, as they are pretty much acceptable to any port we might visit, and what we do to ensure we fix deficiencies. On that side, I draft the policies, the Captain signs them, and we carry on as we have. I just have to register the inspections in a log, and if requested, show them to port authorities when asked. It should be practically seamless, and painless. The cost of this effort is my food."

"Where we don't meet Health and Safety standards, we have to fix that. As of this moment, there isn't a place on the ship we don't. Captain, in that regard, your Science team has been outstanding, and deserving of recognition. I've made a few minor suggestions in two months, and all of them have been implemented immediately. I'm seriously impressed. The only place about which I have concerns is the Galley. That smell is not a hazard, but independent inspectors will raise questions. I have the health inspections on file, and tests results available to show there is no health issues, but if we can show we are attempting to rectify the problem with 'work orders' and 'parts demands', inspectors may just hand wave it. Even better, we fix it! That may cost money, for parts. Until we look at it and pull a few panels, I can't estimate that."

"Listen Mikhel.....Help the Lieutenant out here....he's trying to come up with a realistic budget (and its only a budget ..but it gives the Captain a more realistic sense as to what we're really looking at... Can't you supply some kind of rough number for here to Drinax in terms of any additional supplies you think might be needed to be acquired in Torpol? And at least a budget number of possible repairs at Torpol if possible to rid of us that smell in the galley?"

"Sorry, all. If you'd like a number, running the Med Bay at the previous level of demand, with only the Science Team aboard, I'd estimate Cr1,000/month. If people get sick, or start getting perforated on a regular basis, ratchet that up to Cr5000 or Cr10,000/month. The Galley issue can be investigated, and when the Engineering Department and I do the 'open panel' inspection tomorrow, we'll have a better idea of the cost. I would really like to find a dirty filter to replace, and that might cost a hundred credits or two. Worst case scenario, we have to rip out all the ducting and replace it, due to grease saturation, and that could be thousands, and a week without a Main Galley. Anyone religious? Say some prayers."

"That smell came with the ship, Doctor. Given most of us spend our time elsewhere, we never prioritized investigating it. I wish you luck on finding the cause," said Athena before turning to face all of them. "To be clear, this ship has run one way or another. It is not a lack of care, but simply a different way we've operated as most of us do not have the military background or need for a tightly run ship. But that said, the science team will help as needed as they know the value of being accepted on the Pioneer for their work. We also understand the value of new ideas. As long as it does not impede research, or my time in my lab, you may bring your finalized ideas on improving the Pioneer to me to approve or deny."

"And Crockett," continued Athena, turning more directly to him. "If you could hash out a better SOP for future checks on crew and passengers, it will make things go more smoothly. My word is final when hiring crew. If you, and any of the others," Athena glances around briefly before turning her attention back to Crockett, "have concerns, those should be figured out before I give my word and hire them. I have an image to uphold, and dressing down crew after I have hired them does not do well for it. I do not want to undermine your experience with matters of security given that's why you were hired, nor am I putting blame solely on you, but I would like for a better procedure to be put into place for the future so that does not happen again."

"Well....that's my whole point Captain...I've never been hired to do anything....I don't know who told you I had been hired...but there is no existing contract or discussion that's ever been held to my knowledge about me having a contract with the Pioneer...It wasn't you who hired me as you were at the Downport when I arrived on Marduk....so can't we just agree to work out a contract now or tomorrow (but soon) and put this to bed....?? ....It doesn't have to be a big thing....I just need a firm understanding of terms of engagement so to speak....and whether or not I'm working my way to Drinax in return for transportation with minimal duties...or whether or not we require something more complicated....that's all...but to say again...I have never been hired to perform duties aboard this here ship."

"Ah, that should have been taken care of by now. No contract was sent to you? I'll send a note to Jörn to get that paperwork sorted for you. He has been handling it lately. For now, I am fine with you working your way to Drinax as the Security Officer. Once we figure out the... details of this engagement with the King, we can firm up what is needed if you remain. Does that sound like a good start for you?"

"Well that's why these things need some discussion and likely a little negotiation Captain. It's a bit too easy of a fix I'd say as the Pioneer has given free passage to that young lady in return for doing a couple of comms preparations during this jump!(Mind you it's being considered as a humanitarian gesture of some sort by my understanding...) And out of a pure desire to save my own bacon back on Marduk I was risking my life....and this situation could easily occur again....so if it weren't for the precedent...I'd be fine...as it looks like "DOC" isn't drawing remuneration either.... Sultana has credentials so I sort of get that part....So maybe you and Sultana could think about this as he seems to be your most senior advisor."

With a slight frown, Athena clasped her hands and replied, "The difference between you and that young lady is that you answered the job listing before the attack. The minute you stepped foot on my ship, you started working, and as I haven't heard otherwise, Doctor Mikhel was pleased with how you performed your job. It is nothing more than fate that you were forced to work before you settled in. And yes, you get paid from that moment onward as a security officer. Or, you can get paid for the last couple days you have been on this ship, and then you can stop working and start paying your way as a passenger before we drop you off in Torpol."

"You had a resume and background so you got hired for security. The young lady you seem to have a grudge against is doing the job she took over and is working on a trial basis after proving she could work Comms. But we are talking about you, and MY ship, not her and MY ship. You performed your job as security, you get paid for that. You may also work with Doctor Mikhel as well if you're so concerned about the young lady. And if you decide to not be security anymore, I expect you to start paying credits as passenger from tomorrow onward and plan your own way to Drinax from Torpol."

Mikhel leans over and whispers in Crockett's ear, "The Captain has called you a 'Security Officer' a few times. That means double, or more, pay than a Security Troop. Clarify that." Mikhel cracks a viscious smile. "Then, I can call you 'Sir'." Mikhel, still smiling wider than a Cheshire Cat, straightens up.

"Interesting proposal Captain. Could you clarify what my remuneration would be from moment I boarded Pioneer to our next stop at Torpol please?"

[Crockett is thinking to himself that if Captain specifies an acceptable pay amount...it will be a verbal contract for now that would satisfy him and that matter could be put to bed]/

"Pardon me if it's out of line, Captain, but I think I can agree with Mikhel's tongue-in-cheek suggestion. We're using Crockett here as more than just a hired marine gun, useful only for pointing and shooting. Some of his methods are perhaps more Marine than Navy, but maybe I can sand down a few of his rough edges." He smiles slightly to show it's intended to be humorous (at least to Navy people). "I suggest we go ahead and offer him the Officer Marine rate (2k fyi), to cover additional duties such as security planning and background research, for the remainder of our trip to Drinax. We have no idea what's going to happen at Drinax, so there's not much point in making plans for after that. If the title 'Security Officer' fits the job he's doing, then he should either be paid for it, or he should stop doing it. Or state his reasons for doing it for free, just so we know what they are."

(Jörn)"As the Captain said we have lots of opportunities for different types of people here on the Pioneer. Most do not last more than a handful of jumps with us Sir Lieutenant here being one of the few to stay and earn the Captain's trust. I will remind everyone that we do not have any dedicated staff, crew, personnel, however you might style a job description. The Pioneer's expense books are based on research. I had no idea where the next refueling was going to come from but somehow the Captain made that happen yet again. Now we have a bit more in the accounts thanks to Sir Lieutenant. We can afford to pay, Officer? Head of Security? a slight amount on a prorated basis at least until we get to Torpol. I do hope we get to settle in there for a few months."

"And yes, I am aware I said Security Officer. Do I need to write this out in crayon for you to understand?" asked Athena, slightly exasperated, briefly pinching the bridge of her nose. "The last thing a lab ship needs is a trigger happy trooper on board shooting valuable specimen that escape."

Shooting a serious look at the group, she continued, "And to be clear, protocols are to stun or tranquilize, NOT kill because you are afraid. Some of these specimen are valuable and I will not have them killed from lack of composure or fear."

"I think you may have just broken a Marine's heart, Captain," Sultana says with a slight smile and nod of his head towards Crockett.

"Is there a health risk of which I should be aware? There are passengers on this ship, now. If for no other reason, there are legal issues that could become protracted and expensive. I have stunners and Tranq ammo for any 10mm Snub Pistols on board. Are there specific chemicals we could load in some Tranq ammo that would be most effective, and less unintentionally lethal, to the specimens? There are spaces I haven't inspected, so there are things on this ship for which I don't have awareness."

"There are laboratories you will not inspect, Doctor, for the safety of the experiments and for yours as well. As of now, we do not currently have anything on board you should be too concerned about," replied Athena, almost wistfully. She paused a moment to think. "Although there is... hmm, no, nothing for you to worry about with that one."

"Anyways, while passengers are rare on The Pioneer, the labs are set up accordingly to allow plenty of time for lockdown if it were to happen. The most dangerous experiments are kept in the farthest labs. It has been many years we've had to enact such a thing. That researcher was fired and our SOPS have been greatly improved since then. Each are tailored towards whatever research is being done from as banal as basic psychological evaluations to the far more interesting experiments on certain lifeforms. The SOPS are in the system to read at your leisure. If any of it is redacted, you'll have to ask the researcher for details in person and hope they'll talk to you. These will include what chemicals would be best to use for restraint."

With a small sigh, Athena added, "Although, I do suppose a threatened life of value may require more ....aggressive means of protection if stunners or chemicals do not work, and a lockdown fails, but only as a VERY last resort. We do include it on the SOPS. For liability purposes, of course."

"Is there anything that will propagate through the ventilation system, or able to get through locked metal doors?"

"Not if it is contained properly for the first such as the caging system used for Eleni's ticks, and the hoods and positive air pressure rooms for any viral studies, and not currently, unfortunately, for the second. Remember scientists must look after their own health, too, Doctor, or else we couldn't keep researching. I have no intention of waking up with ticks on me."

"To say I've been having qualms since Eleni collected her samples on the Marduk docks, is an understatement. I haven't heard of any infestation or infection issues, nor dealt with anything but bumps, scratches and strains in two months, so protocols in the labs have been working. I'm trying to mentally separate emotional and professional reactions to those critters, but it remains difficult. Captain, I'm reassured that you have oversight and a vested interest in isolation of experiments."

"That's fine Jörn...'prorated basis' should work fine....Just hoping to get a precise idea of what that is to be and we can call this contract business done I think? Did someone just say "settle in at Torpol???? for a few months????... Anyhow...Just state what you wish me to do and until Torpol or until Drinax??? If this gets settled I'll put my mind to some immediate security concerns for the Captain (if she wishes) and Lieutenant to sign off on....Likely to include a quick one-on-one with our passengers that should go quickly as long as they don't get "evasive" on me or others conducting the interviews (If it is to be...I'll suggest Mikhel do the Vargr and the other fellow...while the Lieutenant maybe interviews the entertainer....and I'll take the "explorer" as I'm personally most suspicious of her for now...

"As already stated, I need better protocols written before bringing others on board. I do not approve of how Nicola was handled. Nor am I a fan of you doing one-on-one interviews if you cannot keep your... "rough edges" in check. You will work with the Lieutenant, and as you seem familiar with him, the Doctor as well, on how to conduct those planned interviews in a more civilized manner. I repeat, again, this is lab ship. We are a civilian vessel, not a boot camp. If passengers will be future income, I rather not scare them away if word gets out about rough handling. I will say Doctor Mikhel has found a good way with the passengers. Maybe take a page out of his book."

"And given I dislike repeating myself, which I keep having to do, I will let Jörn or the Lieutenant lay out your expected duties."

"Hmm.. this is a rough list, feel free to add or correct any of it." He ticks out a finger for each item as he thinks of it, "One, verify the safety of incoming goods, items, or people, preferably before they get on board. Obviously not always possible, but preferable. Two, security on board the ship if anyone or anything suddenly becomes a problem. Three, ah.., Captain, should we worry about theft or smuggling by anyone on board? We can add inspecting outgoing items or people, to make sure nothing is being taken that shouldn't be. Four, advise the rest of us non-military, non-groundpounders on military or tactical matters within your area of expertise. I'm Navy, I don't really have much training in firefights or the like. And, five, although I think this applies to everyone, it'll be more your area than anyone else's, defend the ship if it's attacked." He looks around the table, "Did I leave anything out?"

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Intellectual theft is a big concern. That would be reviewing who has accessed systems within the ship to make sure there has been no unauthorized access or unauthorized data downloads. Crockett, I will also grant you permission to interview anyone my team brings on board, as well. While I have allowed Sherris her... guests, as long as they keep to her room, it would be good to make sure they are only there for her ...body, not her body of work. Inspection of outgoing items is appropriate as well. None should be entering the laboratories, but given Doctor Mikhel's concerns, it does no harm to ensure protocols in place are working as they should and nothing is leaving the lab, willingly or not."

"Those duties work fine for me Captain as laid out my yourself and the Lieutenant, I'm still curious about the pay arrangements though ...Your counsel "Jörn" said pay would be 'prorated' between Marduk and Drinax...but I'm still awaiting to hear from him regarding an exact credit amount...i.e. what the pro-rating is based upon as an overall monthly stipend? I'm sure he'll be getting back to me soon and we'll have ourselves the terms of a contract agreed upon."

The L-T just sparked an idea. Mikhel, although never a leader in ground combat, learned a lot about others' mistakes the hard way, by having to clean up the casualties. After 20 years of front-line experience, Tactics was a skill Mikhel had firmly wrapped up. Trade for Blade practice? The 'Have Gun, Will Practice' emporium on Torpol High Port had a practice arena for sophonts to hone skills in more than static shooting ranges. Teams could go against teams with non-lethal weapons in mazes. Could be a good place to teach tactics to novices?

(Jörn)"Excuse me? Drinax? I thought we were heading towards Torpol? Captain do we have an actual destination? Or are we just wandering the Reach in search of something in particular?"

Looks at Crockett, "I will make sure you are paid when you leave the Pioneer. We have always kept the crew salary funds in reserve until the person departs the ship so we have the ability to defray any additional costs. Such as when that chemist Dr. Brolin caused us to have to rebuild the stateroom he was living in before the accident."

Eyebrows go up, and an inquiring look is focused on Jörn.

"Torpol then Drinax, Jörn. I have business to attend there. Whether or not Crockett remains with us past Torpol remains to be seen."

"As for payment, Crockett, if you last a month, as the Lieutenant said, you'll be paid 2000CR. If you don't last a month, starting from when we first picked you up, you can do the math of what your payment will actually be. Simple division here. And subtraction if you damage my ship as well."

Rubbing her temple from the headache of this circular negotiation, Athena muttered, "Damage aside, at least Dr. Brolin was straightforward conversation."

To Passenger Goalnouk from the Ship's Doctor
Private: If you are not the intended recipient, stop reading!

Dear M. Goalnouk,
My knee-jerk response to you for conditions on Torpol was that the humidity will be annoying for someone with fur. It will be that.
However, on researching the issue, there is a significant concern. Humans will be affected by conditions in the tropics, due to heat and humidity. Vargr could suffer serious medical conditions, due to physiology, that could be lethal.
Please see the attached document for conditions and symptoms of which to be aware, and the remedies for those conditions.
Mostly, there are no preparations to be made prior to arrival for the conditions, but reading and heeding the warning signs.
It is vital that you watch your core body temperature carefully, and keep cool, without exertion, in high heat and very humid conditions. These will be far too common, if you are outdoors in the Torpol tropical region.
Should you wish to discuss the attached document or other topics, I remain available at your convenience.

The 'attached document' has not been attached, but could be (Can now be found on the Out of Character[1] page). There are issues and concerns, but I'm not providing them, unless someone is playing the Vargr.

To Engineering Deptment Head from Ship's Doctor
Please advise as to your earliest convenience to survey the Ship's Main Galley to investigate a possible Health issue. This problem will require Engineering (Life Support) and Mechanic skills. Initial investigation may only take an hour, but that will hopefully either fix the issue or give a rough scope of work for future efforts.
