The Circle of Five meet on the bridge of the Pioneer to clean up plans for the next couple of days before leaving Torpol for Drinax.
Mikhel, Crockett, and Sultana have been to the tailor's and give the procedures to Eleni and Athena. Eleni shows Athena the designs she commissioned for new badges for the crew.
Thank you to Mikhel for the excellent artwork (to be posted on the Pioneer page soon)
Sherris is still on planet enjoying shore leave.... doing her social interactions research.... and has her commicator in case of emergencies. Ranough is awaiting an approval for hire. Mikhel and Athena have worked with him before. He enjoyed the jobs he did with the Pioneer people and wants to come along. Athena has given her blessings but wants Sultana and Crockett to give their opinions after the non-normal way Nicola was handled. Athena has put these people in charge for a reason. So she can concentrate on the science.
At 6:00 Athena and Eleni are due at the tailors. [How are we going to have a meeting and discuss what needs to be discussed this DAY 351 and still meet this requirement to be at tailors at 0600??? I suggest GM changes this to 0800 and we extend other timemarks as it is not really making sense to at least one of us.]
Various searches and communications can be done securely on the bridge so no other crew have access to the transmissions. Separate secure from the research feeds, etc.
Hiring for pilot(s)? and addional crew you think you might want to handle two starship is the key priority to solve. Silas, the former Scout who was a passenger from Marduk to Torpol might be a good addition as well as Ranough.
New page on the site for a Ship's Record for a Harrier Commerce Raider. This is the ship we will be offered by the King of Drinax. A table of crew positions is provided, with optional crew or skills desired for better use of the ship.
Link -> Harrier
Minimum Prize Crew For the Harrier is: Pilot/Astrogator, Engineer, and at least a Gunner for self-defence. This will allow it to be flown to some place to get more crew?
(Eleni)" I really like these new badge designs. How many do we want of each? I was also thinking of getting a double sized one all in gold to give to the King when we meet him? Ceremonial type of thing?"
"The jeweler said he can have them ready in two days"
"With 3D metal printing, we just need to finalize the design and tell them to go, and we should have them nearly instantly. The ideas were coming fast and furious, and I just threw a bowl of noodles at the bulkhead to see what stuck. Do we want bars for hierarchy? Do we want just the helix and colors for departments, rather than the symbols and art? If we go with the art for departments, do we want to integrate the helix and the ship in the word 'Pioneer'? Let the Captain decide, and we go with that.
"Crew for what ship? Hiring here would probably be better than whatever is available on Drinax, unless some of the locals want to be part of the grand adventure? Would they demand to be part of the scheme? Something to worry about later? At least a few gunners and a Prize Crew if we want to take a ship, so pilot, astrogator, engineer or two, and our own gunners, I would think. Are we looking at taking ships? I haven't heard any solid speculation from this group, yet. Crew hiring isn't my area of expertise, so I'm kinda sitting this out. Tell me when you need bandages, and I'm in!"
"Oh! Do we have room for crew? Are they double-bunking or hot-racking for the trip?"
"Another idea, for crew. If we want tactical practice, we could scout out some boarding crew at the local range when we go?"
"If it were a lab ship, I'd have recommendations, but it is not. It would be best to go by the ... expertise of those who have been on such a ship as this supposed Harrier. I am more concerned about losing crew from my ship to that ship and replacing them. And if we will be taking passengers again for the trip to Drinax."
"The badge designs are a nice addition. I suppose we should bring something for the king. Perhaps we can make some smaller ones to sell as souviners if we keep taking on passengers," said Athena before making an unpleasant expression at the thought. With a sigh, she continued, "I just hope this tailor is quick. I got this outfit fitted recently for a different function. I have experiments to get back to."
[on the bridge with others] "Yea the Security dude here would like one of those badges...but doesn't want to blow the budget right now as some of us may well transfer off the Pioneer if we get offered another ship at Drinax -- just saying"
"I'm hearing the Captain here on couple of points--but first what she asked about passengers en-route to Drinax....the Pioneer treasury can always use more credits and I'm likely the first to keep raising that point...but....I think we need to look ahead operationally in terms of keeping the Pioneer in operational state with sufficient crew...so on to the Captain's question..in summary...my position is let's NOT have passengers and instead let's leave accommodation space for potential new crew.
"Perhaps the Captain needs to hear from Sultana about his intentions should we all get offered another ship at Drinax??? Will he want to transfer to that ship or stay aboard the Pioneer? We should help the Captain out here I suggest and be forthright in our intentions...I for one will certainly want to transfer if such a ship is offered so she will need a new security officer in that event. Will she need a new PILOT....and if so, perhaps we should help out and look for a replacement to learn the ropes and join up here on Torpol and make use of empty bunk beds? .... just saying...
"and as far as you go 'Doc'....I'm going to guess you're in the wait and see mode still until you see the status of this mystery ship and what the mighty KING offers us as a 'carrot' to undertake his wishes? A good 'Doc' is hard to replace I realize....so our 'Doc' will have to decide at some point but likely the Captain can worry about replacement if and when it becomes necessary.... Finding a backup pilot asap might be the priority.
"And on the un-replied-to question about a new recruit Ranough ....I have no difficulty security wise in having him aboard the Pioneer. As pointed out he seems to be a known quantity by some of you....I'd like to know a bit more about his skills though and what he brings to both the Pioneer and perhaps to our future adventures beyond Drinax?
"If we want crew for any ship we are offered, we need to transport them. So, the Pioneer won't make money from passengers, on the way to Drinax, if we 'crew up'.
I am in 'wait and see' mode for what's coming. I don't think you should let me off the Pioneer when we get to Drinax, either, let alone have me in the same room as this oaf of a king. Just warning you all.
I am thinking of how we crew both the Pioneer and this new ship, while we are here. Does anyone have thoughts about what we will be doing with either ship? The new one is a question mark. I want a plan for both ships. What are we doing with the Pioneer?
Captain? What do you see happening here? Is the Pioneer going to shadow the new ship as it jumps around the Outrim Void? Is it going its own way? Are you going to park it somewhere, and let it do research in one place?
Oh. Oh! Research tourism! We could offer science tours to paying customers. That could bring in a few deci-credits, while disrupting experiments with tour interruptions. But, it would bring in some money. And we sell merch. We could do media-casts? Less disruptive, more secure, but less money until we get a following. We know a potential producer."
(Eleni)" I really like that idea Crockett. We should do the same design for any crew for the new ship as well. I suppose we should wait to see if this King Oleb has a name picked out for his ship before we just take it. But I think the same design, with the new name inserted for the Pioneer would be a nice touch." LAUGHING "Mikhel that would be ..... worth selling tickets for. Watching the Captain's face as some tourist scientist comes into the lab."
Athena glances at Eleni with a very unamused expression, but does not need to comment.
"Rannough took care of a problem on this ship in a discreet manner. That is all I can say for his skills. Knowing what Lt Sultana plans would be wise. I do need a pilot, after all. As for the plans for the Pioneer, I cannot make them without knowing what we're being offered. This may simply be an opportunity that'll allow us to research lesser known areas of the galaxy. I will ...consider media-casts if we find ourselves that desperate or I cannot no longer ignore what benefits it may provide us."
[Crockett senses this could be great time to have a bit of fun with Sultana] "So Sultana...didn't get much of a chance to chat with you on the lift back here to the Pioneer but what did you think of the slinky seamstress one back at the tailors? I kept turning around looking for you and searching rooms for you and you seemed to be always missing when I came out of the fitting room!"
He smiles, "Sadly, she was a complete professional the whole time. At least the clothes should be a good fit."
and on a more serious note....do you have a suggested watch plan today for the bridge? I'd like to go back down to Torpol highport if you're planning on taking a run down soon...but want to make sure the bridge watch is covered first as a priority for me....
"It may seem odd, but I'm actually okay with a rather loose watch schedule. We can swap out or mix-and-match as people have other things to do. And while in Jump, it should be safe to include the scientists as well. Not to take away from their research time, of course, but to spread the load a bit and help us all feel responsible for the Pioneer. My thought is to break it into 3 hour shifts. As pilot, I'll take 3 shifts each day. I'm more used to sitting on Bridge and looking at blinking lights. The shifts can be rotated as needed each day, just so long as I get enough sleep time in between. Crockett, you take 2 shifts each day, it's a good spot to run your security checks and logs from. The remaining 3 shifts can be split between Dromah and any other crew as needed. For any scientists who sit watch, you might want to do 3 people on 1 hour shifts each, that way they still have plenty of free time, and it rotates quickly throughout the whole crew. And Dromah can spend a shift doing his paperwork, and still have time free to do Medic duties on the rest of the ship."
[as per Ship Security Plan ref. [2.6] as posted in Ship's Log and approved by Captain -- Crockett wishes to check sensors on the bridge to see what activity there is by other ship surrounding within certain perimeter and close-in to Torpol] And good Pilot Sultana -- while you're here might you do a sensor check/sweep for us... I'm curious about other ships that might be within a first scan radius of Torpol here and I don't really have the sensor skill or I'd do it myself."
"I'll take the morning Bridge Watch. Get the Captain down to Clib. It will be important to have the boss looking better than the rest of us. Not that that will be hard."
"Is there something you are worried about, Crockett? We are on-station in a 'parking spot' a few minutes flight time from anything. No access hatches, nor common space with the Torpol Station. SOPs are that the ship is not approached, except by invitation by Pioneer or coordination with Torpol Traffic. I will keep an eye on the scanners, and there is a warning program running for proximity alerts. Also, Torpol Traffic feeds all moving and parked ships their Traffic Control info, so the Pioneer sees all moving objects in the system."
Do you have a threat warning you'd like to share?"
"No threat warning I'm aware of...just trying to keep aware of any that might be out there.... Well done there former marine now known as "DOC"...just the detailed info I was looking for....How long do you expect your watch to last today? I might hop a ride down to Torpol with Sultana and look around a bit this morning."
Sultana says, "It can't hurt to keep an eye open, just in case Oghma gets very ambitious and throws a second raid out there. The shuttle will head down after this meeting, anyone who wants to be on it can be. All of us will need to go down at some point for the final fittings on our clothes, so there will be multiple trips."
Sultana continues, "On the new recruit, I see no reason not to bring him on. As for additional crew, let's look for another pilot, at a minimum. First off, that will give us more ability to run both the Pioneer and the pinnace at the same time, without leaving either uncrewed. Second, if we do obtain another vessel, we'll be ready to move both immediately. Hiring a weapons officer would be a good idea, but would look *very* odd for a lab ship. That may need to wait for Drinax. We could see what other crew types are available here for hire and pick out any prime candidates for early recruitment. We don't want to blow our budget before we even know if we're going to get this other ship though. For all we know this whole thing is a goose chase. I'm working on the assumption that it isn't, but we need to keep the alternative in mind."
Mikhel takes up station on the Pioneer bridge for the Forenoon Watch (08:00 - 12:00). After doing the necessary watchkeeping functions, checking in with Torpol Traffic, checking scans, and monitoring ships's functions. Once all things were checked as nominal, Mikhel sends some messages:
To Clib, Emporium of Haberdashery, Torpol Main from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Dear Clib,
Apologies.
I have been unavoidably detained, and awaiting the return of the Pioneer Away Team.
As of my previous visit, I hope you have all the necessary details to produce a suitable ensemble for my soiree.
If you need more input from me, please contact me through the Pioneer comm channel.
Sincerely,
Mikhel
To Torpol Avocates Unlimited, Torpol Main from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Very much appreciate the information and the thorough response. Especially appreciate the extra effort expended to follow up on the situation.
If possible, can you provide IDs for the gentlemen, or any information on their origins? Any information on the private ship, such as name and departure time?
Anything that would be of use to allow follow-on investigation would be appreciated.
M. Dromah
To Torpol Tourism, Torpol Main, from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Please advise as to how to post/report exemplary customer service by agencies and/or service providers on Torpol.
Agency: Torpol Advocates Unlimited
Service Provided: Legal advice and support to ship's passenger in legal situation involving custody.
Comment: Torpol Advocates Unlimited is due high praise for their thorough and expeditious handling of a difficult situation, providing detailed information on a contentuous problem. Diplomatically finessed a multi-governmental confrontation while supporting a vulnerable individual.
Many, many thanks for their assistance.
[Crockett has not heard anything on Comms about shuttle leaving for Torpol, but he wants to be on it since Mikhel is apparently going to do a bridge watch this morning....and once there he is hoping to be able to identify an overview of size of highport and what he sees as be begins to initially see what he can discover on foot....just trying to get lay of land...perhaps he can hire a guide of some sort???]
Checking for public information on King Oleb of Drinax on Torpol Infonet:
Mihkel Dromah: [SKILL] Electronics (2D+2) (vs Difficulty 6) [2d6+2 = 9]
[ +3 Effect] [Average SUCCESS] 15+ minutes
Checking for public information on Drinax in general on Torpol Infonet:
Mihkel Dromah: [SKILL] Electronics (2D+2) (vs Difficulty 6) [2d6+2 = 6]
[ +0 Effect] [Average SUCCESS] 15+ minutes
As best that Mikhel can tell King Oleb is well known for being extravagant in his personal life and even more so in his public life. He has two children, no mention of a wife. It is widely speculated that in his younger days he was an dilettante out adventuring and he had several adventures throughout the Reach. He is known for trying to continue his father's push of being the true heir to the Sindalarian Empire.
To Torpol Tourism, This is Pioneer. Security officer Crockett wishes to employ guide for a day upon arrival approx 0900 today. Please advise this channel.
Pioneer, we are always glad to welcome any crew you have to spend some of your valuable shore leave time here on planet. If you wish a guide to join you on your own ship... I see you have two registered with the Pioneer, we can provide you with a person or if you would like we can meet at Highport and accompany you down on one of the system shuttles. Attached is a partial list of some of the amenities we offer
The attached file is over 40 pages long of many types of shopping, resorts, entertainment, and other activities available
Torpol Tourism, Pioneer Security Officer Crockett copies. Many thanks...Perhaps I might contact you at Highport in about an hour...Do I do that on this channel? OVER
Pioneer glad to forward your requests to the right section, contact when set to arrive and will have a rep at the gate for you.
[Crockett moves to departure area /air lock/cargo bay? and awaits next shuttle to Torpol hoping perhaps a crew member might be available to run a quick transport anytime after 8:00am at close of meeting on the bridge this morning.]
"Prepping the shuttle for departure. All aboard who's coming aboard."
"For sure Crockett will spend morning until at least 1:00pm on Torpol and be happy shuttle is ready for boarding. I also need that crate here boarded into the shuttle cargo area as I need to have my combat armor checked out. Please make sure I am awakened upon arrival as that 5:00am meeting call was a bit early for me."
[Crockett uses crew comms to inform Mikhel and Sutlana of his WATCH availabilities for today] 'Crockett' will be Dog Watch on Day 2 and should be back in time from Torpol for that unless there are unforeseen circumstances. Sultana will have to take "Afternoon Watch" today for Team 3 beginning Noon-4pm. Sorry but 'Crockett's' own plans for today are pre-set and this Torpol Tourism activity may well take longer than originally allowed for....
Torpol Tourism, Pioneer Security Officer Crockett here just departing PIONEER now via our morning shuttle transport to Torpol. Should arrive in approximately 15-20 minutes. Would like to be met upon arrival by your representative and by Torpol Security as I have crate that needs to be taken and stored in bounded warehouse during next few hours on Torpol as it contains my battle armor I am going to try to have maintenance update performed on if such can be arranged via Torpol Security. Declaration for security: I will have no weapons on my person.]
1104-351 9:00 - Torpol Highport
The airlock latches clunk into place around the pinnace doorframe as Sultana docks the boat with Highport
[Crockett awakes from his morning catnap and departs pinnace hopefully to be met by Torpol Tourism and Torpol Security before pinnace departs as he needs to make arrangements for transfer of his crate into custody of Torpol Security.]
Crockett is greeted at the highport by a porter and a member of Security. As they make their way to Security she notes that the Tourism advocate will meet them there. Once at security here they take the crate to a secure locker area. She puts her thumbprint on the lock along with Crockett. "This is secure and needs an order from the judicial arm to open without you being present. As long as your ship the Pioneer is in orbit it will be part of the station fees. If you wish to leave after departing you need to make arrangements ahead of time."
She brings Crockett over to another woman and introduces her as Miliani. "Hello Mr Crockett, I am your shore leave ambassador today. What sort of things can I help you with today? I heard you wanted to have some maintenance done on your equipment? That can be arranged at several different shops here at Highport. There are many options at the various resorts for other activities as well. How can we make your stay here more pleasurable?"
Mikhel looks over the Incoming/Outgoing traffic logs. He's noting the ships (if any) filing flight plans for Drinax from the Torpol system (Torpol Highport or any other traffic, as there are two Highports and several mining operations in two asteroid belts). This is informational, and not invasive. Just trying to see what ships (type and size) might be going that way. This will be ongoing, each time Mikhel is on the Bridge Watch. If possible, a quick parameter input to record any ships that pop into/out-of Torpol and out to Drinax (if they file that info with Torpol Traffic). The record is for the times Mikhel isn't on watch, so he doesn't miss blips.
PS: This includes 'Calls for Passengers' from other ships in system going to Drinax.
Mikhel finds very little traffic heading from Torpol to Drinax. There was one ship that went out today, the Pioneer is listed from your flight plan, and there is one official government flight from Torpol to Drinax leaving the same time that the Pioneer is. There are two passengers looking to go to Hilfer who match what the Pioneer has listed.
Additionally, Mikhel will search local feeds for "Jobs Wanted" or resumes posted looking for work in the Torpol system. This will include the secondary planet and the Traefar Spaceport, or the above mentioned mining operations, if they have separate feeds. Mikhel will be looking for Engineers, Gunners, and Astrogators. If the resumes don't include TL, they will be noted, but the search parameters will ignore anything listing less than TL12. Mikhel will log and flag results, not transmit any requests for info. This is a look-see, not a pull.
Mikhel sees Silas, the Scout you had on board has listed himself as looking for a working passage. No listed destination. There are a dozen other postings requesting a working berth or crew posting that fit the parameters.
So first of all MILIANI thank you and Torpol Tourism for this service. It is truly appreciated. So we can deal with maintenance on my armor unit a little later...but first tell me (show me if possible) what the lay of the land looks like here on the Highport and then lets move on down shortly to Torpol itself maybe. I gather from our exchange of radio messages that you can provide transport service as well to make that happen. I should do a time check with you also.... so could you share that little item with me so that I might synchronize my timepiece please?
(Miliani)"Certainly Sir. Here on Highport we have a small selection of shops and services. Most sophonts visiting on shore leave prefer to go to the surface for fresh air and open skies. she double checks her communicator for him to ensure Crockett's is on the correct time for the system "Would you like to visit one of the lounges here to discuss what opportunities you want to explore? Or would you like to talk on the way to the surface? We pride ourselves in providing many chances to relax and enjoy your shore leave. "
"I'm really interested in getting a sense as to how much area the Highport covers here...opportunities here for warehousing up on the Highport, any brokerage services for trade goods, perhaps a hiring hall for people seeking adventure etc...and perhaps a sketch of any kind really to get a sense of what we're seeing here....?
Then we can chat aboard our transport down to the surface....OK?and btw...I need you to help get me to Quasiland Resort for 1400 hrs appointment today.
Posting to Torpol Information Boards - "Seeking working passage from Torpol. Can offer services as spacecraft Pilot, basic Engineer, and/or Computer specialist. Willing to take standard crew rates. Prefer short term contracts. Contact Martin Blacke at the Quasiland Resort"
[Response to Posting to Torpol Information Boards by Martin Blacke at Quasiland Resort] "We should chat after lunch today...will come to Quasiland Resort 1400 hrs and ask for you"
(Miliani)"Of course Sir. The Highport does not have much in the way of extensive amenities. We do some storage here as you are aware of for our guests so they can leave their worries behind. Anything from small items of value, to large cargo shipments can be handled here. There is a set of interconnected trade services on the fourth level. Vistors from the Imperium, the Florian League traders, some of the Aslan visitors, even as far away as the Sword Worlds. I know you had some of those on board your ship. And of course all those visitors from the Borderlands. It can be quite the scene sometimes up there. With lounges on three, and a smaller exclusive one on five for sophonts to relax between doing business. Levels two and one where we are now are much more transient. Spaces to rent by the night or week for those who just need to be away from their own ship. Of course it is much nicer planetside so few stay here more than a day if they can manage.
(Miliani)"Did you have any cargo that you were expecting to store long term? I am not in touch with the hiring process for the Highport. There are the public boards of course for the itinerant spacer who is looking for a crew position. Is that who you are meeting with at Quasiland?
Thank you Miliani for that overview of the Highport here...I think I'll just leave my crate with those at Torpol Security for now and be happy to move down to the planetside as soon as we can and wonder if you could actually plan now to make sure I am at the Quasiland Resort today for a 1400 hrs. appointment I've already agreed to....and at some stage we need to arrange for me to stop by the tailors where my associates were earlier today? I need to pickup some items there for an event I'm supposed to attend on Drinax in a few days. If I'm lucky there might be some kind of an overview map of what Torpol below actually looks like???
(Miliani)"I would be glad to set up that appointment for you Sir. If we are going to be in Quasiland at 14:00 then we will not be able to make it to that address for you tailor beforehand. Of course I can try for afterwards depending on how long you will be staying in Quasiland.
Brings up a display of the planet.
"Most of our civilian Countries are near the two poles. Entering and leaving each one is why so many people employ a concierge like myself. Many of the tourist destinations are scattered throughout the planet. Many are in tropical waters but there also those like Quasiland that cater to water sports where the liquid is in more solid form."
Fascinating Miliani....Will there be time prior to my visit to the resort to wander the business/industrial main area a bit....? Maybe there is a trade representative I could also meet? As far as the tailor goes...maybe you could word to him that I am delayed today on other business but would like to meet in morning around 10:00am if possible...then you might also contact this resort ahead of our arrival and see if you can book me a room there for couple of evenings...would that be possible?
(Miliani)"Of course I can help you with that appointment. If you would like a stay at Quasiland that can be arranged also. Most of the trading takes place by computer rather than in person stockyards as I have heard happens in other systems. We have tried hard to ensure that every polity gets equal access to markets, imports and exports as they see fit. What sorts of trade goods were you interested in so I can contact the right market managers for you?
You are great Miliani. Very good at your job...Yes on the tailor..please see if he can see me tomorrow morning around 10:00am...Secondly I would like to stay at Quasiland for next couple of nights if you can arrange that...and then the trade commissioner matter ...I think perhaps I could meet with a broker of sorts to first find out what kind of service I might provide for transport of goods from here to Drinax...short hop in next few days...if we could fit that in before my 14:00 at the resort today that would be fantastic...Then perhaps if we also get to the resort early you and I could have some lunch or refreshment and you could be my guest?
1104-351 9:30 - planet side on Torpol
Arrival at Tailors: Sultana, Athena, Eleni. (missing: Mikhel on Bridge Watch from 08:00 - 12:00; Crockett with Torpol Tourism on Highport)
(Clib)"Do you not have a time piece? Or do you have problems with your numbers? 9 does not equal 6. Your friend here, " Rannoigh gives a wink and a grin "He knows how to tell time. And not even all of you are here, did you leave the others where ever... it does not matter step up and let us get started.
Eleni steps up with two dress uniforms. (Eleni) Hello master Clib, the Captain and I, nods to Athena "We have our dress uniforms for the Pioneer here for you to start with. Our previous engagements were not as formal as what we will be attending so I am very grateful that you are putting in this time to update what we have. We are trying to convey serious scientist academic but in an elegant way that you will know how to accomplish. Eleni gives a small smile and help Athena up onto the platform.
"I have been convinced we may need some embelishments to those if not a new outfit," said Athena, looking at Eleni from the platform in what was clearly an agree-to-disagree conversation. "I would prefer a similar style. I loath heels, but I can walk in them fine. The others will come later today. The quicker we are, the quicker you can get to them, although we'll have to get them off ship so do not expect it to be prompt."
(Eleni)"You only pretend to not like embelishments. I agree on no heels, but your lab coat can come down like a cloak to obscure that. turning to Clib "The Captain needs to show off more than just her ship status. Shows Clib the new badge designators "Captain Solis here would go by Doctor Solis if she could get away with it. She needs pockets too, just big enough for her data pad. Only one... she winks at Athena "I get to wear the pants this time.
"What would I do without you Eleni? Ah, yes. Never come out of my lab, making more frequent big scientific breakthroughs, winning a Galatic Nobel Prize," replied Athena with a light, teasing smile. "I admit this upcoming event is a bit out of my familiarity. I am used to the academic sort not those who may pay more attention to clothing." With a slight sigh, she continued, "Fine, yes, I suppose you will have to wear the pants, as you say, to get this done correctly."
1104-351 9:30 - On board the Pioneer
Mikhel records the name of the ship that departed this morning, noting the time. If it is likely the ship that took Nicola, review the published registration. Note the Torpol Government ship, and departure. It is unlikely that names of specific government representatives would be put on a manifest, but if there is, check public records for names of government officials likely to attend a diplomatic function with another government. See if there is a crew listed, and check medical billets, if any. Flag that name for a possible carousing target, on station, if not already known from drop-ins at Torpol Highport.
Note the names and skills listed for those posting for work. Note Silas and Blacke, as well as others. Check these names against public records for any news corelations, or legal notices. Post this research to the Pioneer comms, attention: Captain, Exec, and Chief Pilot.
Mikhel's searches turn up that three ships left the Torpol system during the time frame he is looking at for Nicola. Only one fits his suspicions. A diplomatic vessel with no destination publicly recorded. The ship, the Guilded Goose, is built for passengers on short flights and apparently flies exclusively in the Reach without entering Aslan or Imperial space. The other two ships are freighters loaded with trade goods heading along the Florian Trade Route.
His searches for future traffic turn up only the Pioneer and an official Torpol Government charter heading to Drinax. Both leaving on 1104-357. Curious he searches for previous flights and only finds occasional tramp traders bringing goods to or from Drinax to Torpol over the past year.
The job posting boards have flagged Silas, Blacke, Rannogh, and a Harison Dawn as inquiring about job postings for the Pioneer among others that do not seem to be qualified for what Mikhel is looking for.
It comes to mind that perhaps Torpol Security may have detained 'Nicola' because there were people waiting for her before the arrival of the Pioneer. If the advocate agency has experience with runaways, it might fit with what occured. Now, the private ship is an interesting wrinkle. Who is the father 'Nicola' mentioned? And why does Mikhel recall the name of the ship, and in relation to what?

Mihkel Dromah: [SKILL] Electronics (2D+2) (vs Difficulty 6) [2d6+2 = 11]

Harison Dawn is a retired Naval Admiral from the Imperium, nothing in the Torpol records of any issues since he has been here, skills in Engineering, Gunnery, Sensors, and the normal leadership skill set expected from an Admiral.

The Guilded Goose is known to visit Torpol and other systems in the Torpol Cluster. Mikhel finds no record of who owns it, or noteworthy events that it has been involved with. Seems to be a regular ship in this part of the Reach

and Miliani....Could you inform me of how one checks local employment situations here on Torpol? Is there some kind of job board with those looking for work and those offering work?
I'm also interested in perhaps speaking around 4:00pm (1600 hrs) with the Highport traffic authority that might provide location of vessels that "could" conceivably be interested in some contract work and even a local watering hole where some of Captains might hang out when at Highport?
(Miliani)"Of course I can help you with that. There are boards for those who want to hire, and those who are looking for work. sends the links to Crockett's comm "There are also boards for those looking for work here in system as well of course. I can match you with one of the service contracts as well if you like. They are concierges like myself who handle all the details for recruiting.
"And where should I look Miliani for that just sent link for the 'boards'?"

Crockett to Pioneer Captain and Crew.
Please be advised that I have found an opportunity here on Torpol to pursue that will require me to resign my arrangement with the Pioneer to serve as your Security Officer on the next leg of your proposed journey to Drinax. I am remaining here on Torpol for the foreseeable future. To compensate somewhat for my hurried departure Captain, I offer to forego any credits due me for services performed to date. It has been my honour and enjoyment to have been aboard the Pioneer.
I should add that this decision means I shall not be returning today to do watch duties for 16:00.
To Silas Lane, Torpol Information Board.
I am presently here on Torpol and have time between now and 1:45pm today to meet with you privately if that might be possible.
Most important for your immediate consideration. I have transportation and can come to you.
Pioneer to Crockett: Good luck on your path forward. Your contributions to the Pioneer have been noted and appreciated. Captain Solis out."
Elsewhere on Torpol Sir Lt Sultana enters the local TAS chapterhouse. He approaches the desk, and approaches the sophont there. "Good day. I'd like to do a bit of research on Drinax and the surrounding systems, in particular the political and trading landscapes, as well as any known risks, such as pirates or Hierate. I'm representing a group of investors contemplating branching out in this region of space, and need to collect enough information to be able to tell them whether or not the potential rewards are worth the potential risks. I'm hoping that, this close to the system, you have access to information and sources not readily available in the Imperium."

Attention Crocket, PSV, Pioneer.
Silas Lane responding to your request about employment. I can do a jump or two with the Pioneer at wage depending on direction. Still working on reporting details of our encounter at Marduk. I will be able to leave Torpol after 353. What destination is the ship heading?

Attention Silas Lane, Torpol Information Board.
I say again...I am presently here on Torpol and can come to you. Time now approx. 12:05pm.
Important matters to discuss that require your immediate consideration.

No sign of the Voyager returning to the Pioneer, so Mikhel settles in for a double watch. He calls to the Science Team to see if anyone has prepared lunch, and asks if something could be dropped off at the Bridge. If everyone is busy, Mikhel is prepared to take a portable comm to the galley to get some food.

Jim,
I was intending to meet up with you on Torpol, if you were anywhere near Clib's Highfalutin' Emporium of Haberdashery, but the away team and Voyager are 'adrift'.
I will update you ASAP when I am heading dirt side.
Your winger,

Naval Slang: Adrift
1. When referring to a vessel it implies that it is not under control and therefore goes where the solar winds and ether currents take her.
2. Improperly secured or stowed. Out of place.
3. Officially AWOL or simply missing from your place of work.

1104-351 14:00 - Voyager Returns to Pioneer
The away team returns, and Mikhel greets them at the airlock.
"I was getting worried. How did the interview with Rannogh go? Is he packing up and getting ready to join us? I'm waiting for Clib to get back to me about whether he needs anything else. I am doing research on other possible crew, and awaiting answers to inquiries. I can remain 'closed up' on the bridge until the First Dog Watch, if everyone wants to sort out things from their trip."
Naval Slang: Closed Up
1. Someone who is competent, alert and deports oneself in a professional manner.
2. Describes personnel or teams who are at their place of duty and ready. e.g., "GDR is closed up." (GDR - Gun Direction Room)

1104-351 14:00 - planet side on Torpol
[2:00pm Crockett arrives with Miliani as guide at QUASILAND RESORT and asks for "Martin Blacke" at reception.
Martin Blacke is seated in one of the Quasiland Resort's cafes enjoying an afternoon espresso and skimming through the latest news feeds on his data pad. His two-week stay on Torpol has been productive. Dinner with his old contacts in the Torpol Secret Police had allowed him to renew old acquaintances and get some of the latest intel on the Aslan situation in the system. The undercover work he had done here years ago had been dangerous and difficult but ultimately successful. Those he had worked with had become good friends. The down time at the resort has been good for his perspective. A chance to relax and unwind as he considers his next steps after leaving the Bureau. Slowly he was coming out of the "work-first" mindset the Bureau so carefully instills in all government employees. And now a meeting with Mr. Crockett for possilbe work aboard a ship. Perhaps this Crockett would be the next step of his journey. A chance to get beyond Torpol and his homeworld in the neighboring Blue system.
He glances up as a tall, thin man wearing a Quasiland Resort uniform and two others approach. The concierge, Armond, apologizes for the interruption. "This is Mr. Crockett and <pause> guest." Blacke smiles kindly. "Thank you, Armond." Blacke slides Cr20 across the table as gratuity. He gestures at the empty chairs around the table. "Please have a seat." Placing three of his fingers in a specific pattern on the screen, he switches off the data pad. He removes and pockets the security key from the pad and returns the pad to its case. He summons the service girl, Glori, and asks for menus for his two guests. "If it would not be too much trouble, could I get another espresso please?" Glori taps the order into her handheld device and moves off.
Martin reaches into his jacket pocket and casually checks the screen of his mobile comm. Deftly, he opens the audio recording app and presses "Record" and then sets the device, screen side down, on the table in front of him. Old habits die hard.
He smiles at his two guests. "I gather that you may have an employment offer for me, Mr. Crockett."
Well yes and no Mr. Black, it's more of an opportunity than an employment offer at moment...but since you have skills that would be of great use to something I'm trying to get organized I thought we should meet. I'm a former star marine with 3 full terms of service and only recently mustered out of that service to seek private adventure on my own which a few days ago brought me Marduk and transport this last week here to Torpol. During my Marduk stay my colleagues at the time and myself were presented with an opportunity to meet in a few days from now with the King of Drinax and likely be offered a special opportunity we're hoping could be quite lucrative to us individually. I don't know how interested you might be in speculative adventure with significant possible financial and personal reward but that's what I've come to discuss with you. Might you be interested in such a proposal?
“Prospects, Mr. Crockett. The Reach is full of prospects. Five credits and a glass of beer in any starport would find me a dozen such prospects. Finding the one that will pay out is the real trick. I spent twelve years watching Aslan Ihate chase their own prospects for acquiring land and social standing among their clans. It only rarely went well for them and I have no reason to suspect the odds would be any more favorable among our human populations.”
“The opportunity you propose raises a number of questions. Since I do not know these colleagues of yours I must assume that my access to this opportunity is through you personally. To that end, I would ask how this working arrangement is to be structured. Do I work for you? If so, perhaps some discussion of salary would be in order. Is this to be a partnership venture? If so, how are shares to be divided among those participating. Since I have no invitation for an audience with the king of Drinax, I only have your assurances that some vaguely defined opportunity even exists.”
“But let’s discuss logistics. It would seem that the specifics of this opportunity will not make themselves apparent until your meeting on Drinax. This begs the question as to whether I would wait for you to return here or if you expect me to accompany you to Drinax. If it is the latter, I would require at the very least basic passage to Drinax. I'm afraid low passage would be out of the question. As I’m sure you can understand, paying for my own passage without any reasonable expectation of earning back the expense would be foolish. Drinax is a world divided into the wealthy and prosperous who inhabit the Floating City and the impoverished who survive as best they can on the war-torn surface of the planet. Since I don’t fancy trying to make a living among the ruins on the surface, this would leave me to find work somewhere on the Floating City. Not impossible but, if I am frank, I would find a greater diversity of employment prospects in more populated system should your opportunity not pan out.”
“So, Mr. Crockett, if you are prepared to get me to Drinax, I think we could explore working together in greater depth once you have the particulars after your meeting with the king. If not, well, I will be staying here on Torpol a while longer and perhaps we meet again in future. The ball, as they say, is in your court, Mr. Crockett.”
Wise answers Mr. Blacke and I not only understand them but I am happy to respond in this fashion. As far as long term beyond DRINAX I am happy to ensure that you have an equal share to whatever I am able to fashion for myself. Don't think I can offer better than that with respect to return on risk. On the matter of transport to Drinax from Torpol here I am happy to see that your transportation costs are covered in advance. I can also offer you a welcome bonus of 5,000 credits payable within 72 hours of the King's New Years Party on Drinax. I require an answer by dinner hour tonight though as there is much work to be done tomorrow here on Drinax and it would be most useful if I had a trusted person by my side to help accomplish what needs to be put in place. It's been a busy so far for me though, and I'd be happy to share a libation with you while you ponder this offer and perhaps share a bit more with me about your life as you have lived it thus far?
Blacke sits back and folds his hands calmly in his lap.
"Well, Mr. Crockett. I can see that this is a matter of some urgency for you. I think it would best if I let you know that my current employment status is not so urgent. I have posted a notice that I am seeking employment on the Torpol data nets. I am sure you can understand that I will need time to consider whatever offers are presented."
"I appreciate your willingness to cover the cost of transport to Drinax and that is certainly a point in your favor but as to your offer of a partnership equal to your own, the question remains - a partnership in what? To quote and old Vargr friend of mine, "Half of nothing is still nothing." It was not in my plans to travel to Drinax to seek employment. As I mentioned, opportunities there tend to be limited. I would not want to find myself stranded without prospects if your venture should not be workable. Well, for me at least. Now, if your offer of Cr5000 were provided up front, that would at least get me back to Torpol should things go badly on Drinax."
"And so here is where I think we are, Mr. Crockett. You have an urgent deadline to make a hire by whatever your 'dinner hour' might be. I have offers to consider. So, no Mr. Crockett, you will not have my answer by this evening unless you are willing to amend your offer to provide some credits up front. I think it would be reasonable to allow me 3 days to consider any offers. If that excludes me from your employ then so be it. I do, however, have some free time while I am here and if you require assistance with whatever tasks you are attending to, I am available to assist you at a rate of Cr200/hour."
"If I do not hear from you in the interim, I will contact you in 3 days with my answer."
Listen...that's fine Mr. Blacke...I think you may not be that suited for what I require right now. I could be in a position to put the "carrot" up front for you...but I would need more enthusiasm for my proposal and immediate help here on Torpol. So I'm going to have to leave you to drink on your own with the thought that best for you right now in your position might be to seek out the Pioneer Lab Ship as I see there are planning to leave Torpol for Drinax in the next few days and they would likely let you work your passage. Maybe we'll see you there. I appreciate the time you've had this day to chat with me. I must be leaving now. Good luck.

Mikhel,
You are correct about me searching for Silas Lane. And Yes he could be of use in serving the needs of our overall quest. If I can locate him I will let him know of a possible interest also by Pioneer in case you haven't located him yourself by that time. Remember he has been aboard the Pioneer and left it when we arrived Torpol. I just really want to know of his intentions at this point as I thought he had promise. We should have perhaps interviewed him before he left the Pioneer. We're good. I don't see my actions as being competitive at this point.
If you come down to Torpol planetside tomorrow we could both meet with him -- if I can find him

Do we wish to meet them and discuss bringing them to Dirax?

To Pioneer Crew and Science Staff, from Standby Pilot, PSV Pioneer
All,
Voyager is heading down to Torpol for the evening, if any wish a ride.
Departure: 18:00 hrs.
Standby Pilot,
Mikhel
Mikhel will be at the Quasiland Resort for the meeting at 19:00!
Attn: Mikhel, Pioneer Copy that. See you Quasiland Resort.
Mikhel checks with the crew, before heading out, to see if anything had been ordered for the ship. Food, supplies, research orders, so that Mikhel wasn't running completely empty. He puts a text out to any crew already away (like Nika), to let them know the Voyager was out and moving around, if they needed a ride.
Giving a few minutes on running up systems, Mikhel checks in with Torpol Traffic, for clearances to the downport.
Once clearance is verified, Mikhel sounds the disconnect, and backs the Voyager from the dock. Then, proceeds to Torpol. Enroute, he checks traffic, noting any new traffic inbound from jump break-out.
[Crockett arrives early for meeting with Mikhel and Silas Lane at Quasiland Resort]
Mikhel arrives at Quasiland, and heads to the meeting point. Eyes scanning for Crockett and/or Silas, Mikhel notes that he is, as usual, under-dressed for the establishment. A nod to the concierge, who is giving Mikhel a critical twice-over, Mikhel quietly states he is looking for guests. Provided with names, the concierge indicates the lounge. Mikhel gives the concierge a small credit chip, and a business card.
"While I am in you fine establishment, if there should be an emergency requiring medical assistance, don't hesitate to contact me. My credentials are on file with the local authorities, if you want to check what I can handle."
Mikhel then heads into the lounge...
[Already seated and enjoying a refreshment, Crockett spies Mikhel upon his entry to the lounge and beckons him over.] "Welcome to Torpol 'Doc'. Glad you're early it will give us a chance to catch up before SILAS arrives. Have you found any new crew yet?
(Miliani)"Hello, I am Miliani, I am Crockett's concierge today. You are here hiring a new crew together?"
"Miliani, a pleasure to meet you." Mikhel offers a suitable gesture of polite greeting to Milani. "Hopefully, Crockett isn't driving you crazy? He can be a handful." Mikhel gives Crockett the Marine greeting touch. "James. I'm not sure I understand what's going on. I have assembled a list of potential crew, and I know, at least, one person in which we have mutual interest. Silas is probably one of the best Astrogators around. I think we'd be lucky to have him, if he's interested."
Mikhel takes a tumbler from the table placement, and fills it with water, then sits and gets comfortable. Saluting the two at the table with the tumbler, and giving a toast, "Sanitas Semper", Mikhel takes a small sip. "I have given the Captain and the L-T three names I think are worthy of consideration. This is based on their postings on the local nets, their listed proficiencies and related Tech Levels of experience. Just so we know for whom we are competing, the other names on my list are Martin Blacke and Harison Dawn. Rannogh is managing his own negotiations, and I've not offered a reference. This is based on the reception by the other Pioneer crew for the last person I recommended. I'm not putting any recommendations forward, only the selection criteria for creating the list. The Captain and L-T can accept or reject the people as they choose. Blacke has submitted a resume, and I'm not sure how he will fit in. He's ex-Merchant Marine, so that could be an Oil/Water non-mix."
"Dawn." Frown. Mikhel sighs. "Well." Pause.
"He's a retired Navy Admiral. That could be a problem, even though of the three, he's got some solid ship skills. I don't know if I can stay far enough away from him, being the Ship's Doc. If you could get him to Torpol, and keep him off the Pioneer, it might be better for all concerned. The follow-on situation could get a bit messy. We'll just have to take that as it comes."
"So. Just what are you trying to do, exactly? Are you starting the fleet building evolution early?"
"Ah, here's Silas Lane now. Greetings fellow traveller. Mikhel from the Pioneer was able to join us and we can now both explore with you what you might be seeking and how you might be of assistance to our own plans. How have you been?
"I have been better. Drowning in paperwork. Never lose a ship, the paperwork could fill one."
(Miliani)"How do you lose a ship?"
(Waiter)Brings a round of drinks over. Places the order tablet on the table discreetly and steps back away.
Over in the corner of the bar a holovid plays a new popular song by the Aslan singer Uiraus Elrotre:
- ''I've been staring at the edge of the waterLong as I can remember, never really knowing whyI wish I could be the perfect daughterBut I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try[Pre-Chorus]Every turn I take, every trail I trackEvery path I make, every road leads backTo the place I know, where I cannot goWhere I long to be[Chorus]See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls meAnd no one knows how far it goesIf the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind meOne day I'll knowIf I go there's just no telling how far I'll go[Post-Chorus]Go-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohGo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohGo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohGo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh[Verse 2]I know everybody on this island seems so happyOn this island, everything is by designI know everybody on this island has a role on this islandSo maybe I can roll with mine[Pre-Chorus]I can lead with pride, I can make us strongI'll be satisfied if I play alongBut the voice inside sings a different songWhat is wrong with me?[Chorus]See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blindingBut no one knows, how deep it goesAnd it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find meAnd let me knowWhat's beyond that line, will I cross that line?See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls meAnd no one knows, how far it goesIf the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind meOne day I'll know, how far I'll go
Mikhel cocks an ear, and listens to the song. Again. The caterwaul is making the rounds. Mikhel may have to avoid this particular lounge in the future.
"Nice to meet you Miliani. Crocket, Doc and I here got ambushed by some Oghma raiders over in Marduk system. Caused quite the ruckus. These two saved their ship, the Pioneer, but I managed to get my ship, the ISS Buscador, captured by the raiders. I hitched a ride over here to Torpol with their crew so I could be in a place to file the paperwork the Imperial Scout Service requires. Spending some time here dealing with all of that. Still going to be a couple of days at least."
The waiter brings over another round, Here you go. When you are ready to order dinner I will be glad to."
"That's great...I'll let Mikhel tell you about possibilities aboard the PIONEER in a moment, but first what I really want to know SILAS is about those ships you have an interest in that I recall you talking about when you were a passenger aboard the Pioneer last week...Don't suppose one might be available to you here on Torpol right now?
"I have no idea where those ships are right now. I doubt any of them are here at Torpol, but I never check those sorts of things. I do want to be near an A starport on the first, that is when my next payment comes in. That will be useful to find a way to get back to a Scout Base and hopefully get a replacement for Buscador. Why are you looking for a ship Crockett? Something change on the Pioneer?
Very disappointed you don't have access to one of your ships right now I must say. I'm trying to locate another ship for us to take to Drinax with us as part of a larger scenario Mikhel and I and others are working on and unfortunately neither Mikhel or I are at liberty to say much about that. Mikhel our 'Doc' can say what he feels comfortable sharing I suppose, but for me I'm just saying I'm keen to find a ship tonight or tomorrow and that's all I'm focussed on...so as much as I'd like to hang out longer with you both in the company of MILIANI here....I'm afraid it's a short meeting for me as I've got to keep going in my search. I should add that since you don't have access to a ship, I can't offer you employment as I need all the credits I currently have at my disposal to perhaps bribe a Captain to divert his/her current plans to get me to Drinax!!! So Miliani....If we can get on our way and find some ship captain's up at the Highport tonight...I'd like to do that. Will continue our discussion later Mikhel. Good to see you again SILAS...If you sign on with the Pioneer maybe I'll see you in Drinax.
[Crockett waits a sec for SILAS to respond with bigger hope and if not then departs with Miliani]
"Silas, if you are interested in accompanying Pioneer, I can check with the Captain on my return, and see about setting up a meeting with you. Our lastest date of departure would be 357-ish. As it stands, at the moment, you are on the short list, and there is a bunk on the Pioneer. The Captain will have to confirm this, and that will be up to you and her to negotiate. I'm just trying to find crew with the estimated appropriate skills. Things are awaiting a meeting on Drinax to finalize everything. We can stay in touch until you finalize your situation, or you decide one way or another.
If you need anything to help you with the paperwork, please contact me. I do believe you have a copy of my DWB status report for Marduk? I can put you in touch with the security people I spoke to on Torpol Highport, if you want more corroborating statements. They will be collecting information on any ships coming in from Marduk, as well."
If Silas doesn't have any other questions or information on other potential crew, Mikhel will spend time with Silas and compare notes on Torpol. Once done, Mikhel will check on any comms or texts, and head back to the Pioneer.
[Then having left meeting Crockett asks Miliani about prospects for tavern crawl tonight at Highport.]
[words of song he heard plays in Crockett's mind]
-->[Verse 2]
- I know everybody on this island seems so happyOn this island, everything is by designI know everybody on this island has a role on this islandSo maybe I can roll with mine
(Miliani)"Of course I am happy to go with you to Highport and search for potential job opportunities for you, or trade opportunities. I do not think I am the right person to make your quests succeed at the level I would be happy at. I will introduce you to someone when we get there though that should be able to help you.
Good day to you MILIANI...you have been a gem and more than a visitor like myself could ever have hoped for...might you be available tomorrow as well at some stage.(question)
Miliani brings Crockett back to a landing pad and they board the next shuttle up to Highport. They have an hour to wait for the next liftoff. Miliani makes several calls on her com in the meantime.
1104-351 21:00 - Crockett at Highport
The shuttle arrives at the Highport, the passengers disembark. The others are heading to other shuttles that head out to ships parked in orbit or go
(Miliani)"Of course I enjoyed my day with you Crockett, I hope you did too. I think my time with you is done today. I have Master Shlito here to help you with your search for cargo or job opportunities." She smiles and leaves him with Master Shlito.
(Master Shlito)"Hello Mr. Crockett. Your concierge told me you are looking for a ship? or passage? or in search of trade? She seemed to think you had several different options you were interested in. She did mention that you asked about traveling to Drinax. I did a quick search for you and there are two ships heading that way in the next week. An official diplomatic trip by the Provosts and a science ship called the Pioneer that has Drinax listed as a way point on the way to Hilfer. I gather you were told this already? What other options did you want to explore?"
You are quite correct Master Shlito, I am exploring several options. Your world here is full of so many opportunities being at such a crossroads for trade. First, you have been correctly informed about seeking transport to DRINAX and you are accurately informed about my earlier briefings on currently registered departures by both the official diplomatic trip by the Provosts and the science ship you referred to. I guess I might ask that you and your colleagues might make an inquiry for me when it is appropriate to do so about the diplomatic group departure and whether they might consider passage for myself for a fee of course .....
Second though, I was hoping you and I might visit a couple of local watering holes tonight still where I might have a chance to find a Captain or two that might be flexible enough with their schedules and responsibilities to consider an offer of new adventure and payment for services to get me to Drinax in next day or so...
Third, before I forget.....sometime tomorrow I would like you to assist me in booking an appointment with the local tailor here on the Highport as he has some items for me to pickup....(but that is for tomorrow)
and then the other thing you were advised about was my interest in trade opportunities and cargoes that might be here on Torpol that need immediate transport to DRINAX if such were possible. It sounds a bit scatter gun I agree...but I am looking to pull all these puzzle pieces together by some miracle of luck and get to DRINAX as soon as might be possible. In order of priority...what say you about a watering hole visit or two before our day is done (question mark)
(Master Shlito)"I think we can find a place to drink Mr. Crockett. Follow me." He leads Crockett up to the third deck. Pulling into a side corner booth for the two of them to relax. He orders drinks and then turns to Crockett. "So you missed a great opportunity to reach Drinax. Rachando was here but he just left. Rachando is a member of the Royal Court so he would have been a good chance for you to be allowed into the Floating Palace. If you can wait he will be back here in a few weeks. He does some trading in technology for the King. If you want to get there quickly and not wait for him, why not take a berth on the science ship that is heading that way? I can help you find someone to hire to take you there, but the traders that visit that backwater are few and far between. How many credits do you want to spend on this trip?"
Shilito takes a swallow of his drink, scanning the room and looking back at Crockett.
That's funny my new friend Master Shlito. The whole reason I am here on the Highport with you is to find an alternative transport to the science ship you refer to! How long ago did Rachando leave the Highport? I agree he would have been a solution to my search. I should be able to afford the market price for transport whatever it is. I must say it's been a long day and I look forward to enjoying this drink that's about to arrive. Where might you and I find a spaceship captain or two this evening that I could speak with...ones that might not have firm plans for cargo or other deliveries?
(Master Shlito)"I think I can help with that. What is your idea of market price? I do not want to sound off putting but you do know that the going rate to hire a Free Trader for a trip like that would be about 100,000 credits."
YES Master Shlito I understand that. However, that is not type of arrangement I seek. I'm looking for a Captain who is entrepreneurial and seeking of adventure and riches. Can we not find a watering-hole tonight where that kind of Captain hangs out. Maybe tomorrow I might try to meet with a Provost or two with your help...but that's tomorrow...and the night is still young I figure. Young enough to hope for an encounter or two with adventure seeking, private profit making Captains!!!! This is a well situated spot on a busy trade route...There must be my kind of Captain somewhere.
(Master Shlito)"I think you misunderstand what I am saying. I do know that you can book a ticket to Drianx, just apparently not on a ship leaving soon enough for you. There will be other ships leaving that way as I said but it is rare. Drinax is in a desert. We are on the Florian Route there, there are countless ships that would hire you on, pay you to travel with them. I can find you half a dozen captains who would take you tomorrow. From Torpol to Oghma, Thebus and beyond. Or if you wanted to go the other way towards the Imperium to Blue and into the Borderlands. Rimward there is the Hierate Route, Paal would be your best closest spot to Drinax from there. No one goes to a downtrodden system like Drinax unless they have a good reason to. You seem to have a good reason in your mind. So I warn you that any Free Trader captain will ask for a realistic payday. If they are here on Torpol they are likely dealing with goods back and forth along the Florian Route. You will have to convince them to leave a convoy where they have safer passage. You know what a system like Oghma is like, would you want to travel through there alone? Would you want to turn down a steady sure profit for a maybe chance in a place like Drinax? he pauses to look at Crockett in the eye"You know your self best. I take my position here seriously. I try to match up cargo with ships, crew with ships. We can go look in the lounges and see who is there, if anyone wants to listen to your ideas. But I will advise you that you will need something definative for them. They will need fuel to go there and back, they will have empty cargo holds and staterooms. You will have to dangle something in front of them they cannot resist. Even that lab ship knows better and is going through Drinax to get to Hilfer and closer to the Borderlands.
To Clib, Emporium of Haberdashery, Torpol Main from J. Crockett, formerly with PSV Pioneer
Dear Clib,
Apologies.
I have been unavoidably detained, and have been unable to find time this day to schedule time with you.
Might you offer me a time tomorrow other than 6:00am? (as I am having a busy evening up late tonight here on Highport)
I would like to pick up my new clothes and settle my account with you.
Sincerely,
J. Crockett
(Clib) Your new outfit needs final fitting and will be ready for you. You have paid for the suit, pick it up when ready.

Dear Clib,
Message received.
See you in morning.

To Torpol CREW FOR HIRE INFORMATION BOARD
Let it be known to Captains with trade cargoes that former Star Marine eager for adventure and share of trade profits is available for hire immediately.
Please contact 'Crockett' here in Torpol via this radio channel preferably by 1104-352.
Master Shilito leads Crockett over to the promenade where the more open bars are.
1104-351 21:00 - Pioneer
Mikhel gets back to the Pioneer, and checks in with the bridge. He checks the radio log for messages, noting that the Captain sent something to H. Dawn. Mikhel didn't read it, but it was the only message outgoing. So, the other two didn't make the cut? The Morning Meeting might provide some illumination.
Mikhel also noted he'd be bleary eyed at the meeting, as not only was the meeting early, but Mikhel was on the Morning Watch (4:00-8:00).
1104-351 21:15 - Crockett on Highport
[Crockett feeling light-headed and it wasn't because of the refreshment just shared -- more likely the thrill of the hunt out on the Promenade with Master Shilito in search of an entrepreneurial Captain and whether successful or not finds himself thrilled with feeling of action.]
"Well, Master Shilito, you are a man of his billing. Here we are on the Promenade on the hunt so to speak. May we have some luck in search of our prey! I leave it to you to find us the right watering hole.
(Master Shlito)"I think you might find a slight chance with Captain Alito. He is known for high crew turnover, every time he comes through he seems to have a new engineer. He is the Captain of the Free Trader Eliza, mostly standard 200 tons out of the Blue system. You will have to negociate with him, he will want to go high of course. You know a fair booking would be 40,000 credits before factoring in the potential missing cargo costs or profits. I will let you speak with him, then come back when you are ready.
(Master Shlito)"Captain Alito, this is Crockett. He is in search of a ride to Drinax, I will let you speak with him while I go fetch the three of us another round."
(Captain Alito)"Crockett is it? Just a single name? Did you have it amputated? Why the hell would you want to go to Drinax of all places?"
Well Captain...... the 'Crockett' is really James Crockett....and an old old ancient ancestor of mine had the name Crockett and he was known on a far away world for his reputation as "King of the Wild Frontier" -- it's really worth another round of drinks just to toast his memory....but let's get to answering your real question about my interest in going to Drinax of all places.... If you don't mind...and since you are far more familiar with these routes and backwaters than I....I'd like to answer with a question for you first about WHAT you might know of the current "KING OF DRINAX" and his ambitions?
(Captain Alito)"There is no reason to go to Drinax. The King there is likely the last of his line, withering on the vine. Who knows what will happen there after he dies. They produce almost nothing, they have little influence outside of their own cluster but want to think they are the Heirs to Sindal. Why would you think that anyone would be interested in spending time and fuel going there?"
I'll give you my answer then Captain based on my own knowledge. You've got a far trader so you know where some of the money to be made in these 'Reaches' might be and I'm sure you have a sense that there is more money to be made than many folks can dream of....There's a group of us heading to Drinax as we speak by various means to possibly take advantage of the current environment...While we may differ somewhat in exactly how to take advantage of the way these winds are blowing...we agree that there is possibly some opportunities abound. What I have in my possession is an opportunity to talk to the KING himself by way of a special invitation to a party he's throwing and where I'm expecting a private offer will be on the table to take certain activities to enhance his reputation throughout his former historical sphere of influence. I see those opportunities as potentially very (if not extremely) favourable to those he entrusts with this challenge and I'm looking for a captain of my own choosing to partner with me in seeking such advantage. It's a bit entrepreneurial I know and maybe it's not your cylinder of drink, but if you have imagination, if you have daring, if you have a gleam in your eye...then we should keep ordering some rounds tonight and pursue a bit how this could work. What say you? I say get me to Drinax (I don't have a lot of credits with me here on Torpol, but I can afford 5,000 cr to help defray passage to Drinax-- (at which you may well fill this room with laughter given what cost for fuel alone you would endure)....but I can work hard to find you some additional cargo tomorrow to help defray such cost...but for the next few rounds...I need to sense your interest first...By the way Captain Sir...You should know I am a three term former Star Marine at your side and not.. shall we say... without certain defensive skills....and the proud son of parents from the Corporate world back in District 268...so I can certainly work my way to Drinax as well if that were to be your response....Again...What say you Sir?
(Captain Alito)"I would say you are not serious. I would guess you were in the Museum of Sindal, you spotted something that you think can convince the King to hire you to push his agenda. Give it up, if you try that and he catches you the best you can hope for is a quick shot to the head, worse would be throwing you off the Palace and watching you fall.
(Captain Alito)"You seem like a decent guy. I would hire you for the jump to Oghma and beyond. We will be leaving in a day or two once the rest of the crew either comes back sober enough to fly or we leave them here. You get the standard free room and board, paid the going rate for your security work, and at the end when we get to Yggdrasil and sell our goods you get a 3% cut of the profits. What say you Sir?"
I say you'll likely need my kind of skills in Oghma, but Oghma isn't exactly a priority for me personally right now. Your offer of employment is most appreciated though and I truly am grateful for it. I don't know how well you know the KING or his reputation, but I'm hoping your predictions will be off the mark. In any event, it was great meeting you and I wish you well. However, I must take my leave as my own time tonight is limited and I must move on. Again, I thank you for hearing me out. {Crockett returns to private table to see Master Shilito}
(Master Shlito)"So Mr Crockett, who would you like to try next? having heard from Captain Alito what is your strategy? There are a handful of free traders around like you asked about before. Do you have any new thoughts for what might suit you?"
Sure, I want to keep checking with the Free Trader Captains we can find tonight, Far Traders, whatever....There's bound to be someone who fits what I seek. Meanwhile you will be interested to know that Captain Alito wasn't an entire waste of time. I did get an employment offer, but not one that interested me for this current quest I'm on. I also got a hint that maybe this KING on the throne of his at Drinax might not be a nice fellow! We'll see....but I've been warned I think. Next! "
(Master Shlito)"Mr Crockett, I would hazard a guess that any one person in charge of an entire star system is not a nice person. When your Grandfather has the planet you inherit turned into a wasteland because of decisions he made I imagine that you did not win points at dinner by being nice. That is why you are having a hard time finding a ship that wants to visit there. They have little to offer. If Captain Alito offered a spot on his crew that would be a good alternative.
"I can find two more captains for us, I looked up who did not have a flight plan currently filed. One is because his ship is in for repairs, the other is because her first officer is in the jail down planetside. I am not aware of when either of them would be able to leave the system. I am fairly certain that if you wait a couple of weeks you can get a ride. Or I can ask for a meeting with the diplomatic corps for you in the next day or two if you think you have a way of gaining their interest. Do you want to visit with one of them tonight? or I could set up meetings tomorrow morning for you."
Well Master Shlito you are certainly good at your research and connections. I'd like to meet tonight if possible with the Captain that has the First Officer in jail. Then perhaps also set up that meeting with Diplomatic Corps for morning....and I'll see tailor as well then...and maybe even a PROVOST or their senior rep???
(Master Shlito)"Mr Crockett, I will set you up with Captain Losthin for the afternoon. I will forward to the Provosts that you would like to speak with someone. I am not certain that will be itnerested in just anyone. Do you have anyone in the system who could recomend you to them? Where are you staying this evening and I will assit you in getting there.
With Captain Losthin being the female Captain that lost her First Mate to authorities??? If so, that's fine. Prior to that perhaps I should see the Tailor. That would leave LUNCH free tomorrow and if there was a way of contactng our 'Captain Alito' again...I'd like to have you attempt to arrange for me to have lunch with him to pursue couple of things we talked about. Otherwise since I haven't booked out of the RESORT downside yet...perhaps I should just be returned there for tonight if that's possible.
and, on yet another matter.....Can you find out if there is a "GeDeCo" representative here on Torpol? I don't want to contact them...just want to know who they are?
(Master Shlito)"Mr Crockett I would be glad to arrange that. I will have both meetings set for here at the Highport in the afternoon for you. For your GeDeCo request very rarely do they have trade ships come through as part of the Florian Route trade, or crossing to other systems to head into the Borderlands. They run a starport in the Ohgma system so occasional ships do visit there from here and vice versa as part of the Trade Route traffic. How did you wish me to phrase your request to the Provosts?
I don't really seek a meeting with GeDeCo anyway...was just curious if they had a rep here on Torpol...So afternoon is getting set for two meetings then....ONE with Captain Losthin (who lost her First Officer to authorities) and one hopefully with PROVOST representative right? I think you simply convey to Provost representative that there is a former Star Marine visiting Torpol who has some interesting information to share and who wants to make inquiries of their office about possible expansion of their influence along their preferred trade route. The other item is that I think I will need a guide in morning to get me to see the tailor....and the big question is will I be able to see Captain Alito again?
(Master Shlito)"Yes Mr. Crockett. You will have an appointment with Captain Losthin and with Captain Alito tomorrow mid-day after your tailor appointment. Then I will hopefully have a reply for you from the Provosts. Miliani will be meeting you tomorrow at your hotel. "
