1104-352 04:00

Mikhel closes up for his watch, and does the routine checks. The Pioneer is humming along. Nothing but satellites are moving out there. He also checks the ships movement alerts for ships coming in, and any new flight plan filings for ships now indicating they are going to Drinax. Then, he settles in for a few hours of next to nothing. Ships won't be doing much until later. There were no tides to catch in space.

Checking for public information on Uiraus Elrotre. Who and what:

1104-352 06:00

To M. Blacke, Quasiland Resort, Torpol Main: Your CV must have gotten lost in transmission to me. Please proceed to the Pioneer for an interview. Noon if you are able to make it, but given the delayed response, I am willing to wait until evening at the latest. Pioneer, Captain Solis out.

To Captain Solis, Pioneer
Thank you for your kind invitation to meet with you. I will do my best to get to the Pioneer as soon as I am able. I will need to check-out of the Quasiland resort and retrieve personal belongings. I will be there as soon as public shuttle service will allow. I look forward to our meeting.
M. Blacke

To H. Dawn, Torpol Main: My office hours are attached. It is recommended you arrive at the Pioneer by that time for an interview. Pioneer, Captain Solis out.

Mikhel had grabbed a coffee and a snack from the galley a few minutes earlier. He has the list of candidates, and the radio log notes. The Captain only sent out one message to the list. Mikhel wondered at that. He'd find out soon enough why.

There would be flight plans to file: to move crew around; probably pick up interview candidates; and, of course, get Red Lightning aboard.

1104-352 07:00

Admiral Harrison Dawn checked the message again from the crew of the Pioneer to make sure he had the right time. He started to pack up all his belongings feeling it was a pitiful collection after having such a long career in the Navy. He wore his civilian clothes packet his uniform and his dress uniform into his army duffel bag, then check the room to make-sure he had not left anything behind. This had been the longest he had spent planet size since leaving the Academy over half a lifetime ago and It made him think that it’s the little things he missed like the hum of the engines that were always on putting you to sleep like a lullaby.

He checked out of his TAS accommodation in the northern pole of Torpol choosing to stay here as opposed to the more tropical areas that catered to shore leave and parting. He made his way to the transport that was going to bring him up to the High Port. He could not help but feel nervous, for the life of him he could not remember having ever interviewed for a job, having got a commission straight out of college and never leaved the military till now so he had never needed to look for another job. all the same he was looking forward to it he missed life in space all going well he have a new job if not book passage to another planet.

1104-352 07:00

[Although Crockett was up rather late by time he returned to Resort...he rises early and wonders: "Wonder who to expect as my consierge/guide this morning? Miliani didn't really say and Master Shlito didn't clearly say last night...Oh well...Think my first duty this morning is to get myself to the "TAILOR Clib" as I have already paid for his service.]

Crockett arrives at Clib's at 8:00 escorted by Miliani.

(Miliani)"Of course Messer Clib is one of the finest tailors on Torpol. I am happy you are pleased with his work.

Clib goes over Crockett with a quick glance and has him strip down again. He hands Crockett new clothing, everything from undergarments through to the cravat that he tucks into a slot on the opposite side of where his medals would go.(Clib)"This accents that you are retired and are only wearing your medals as a sign of respect for the King. Drinaxian Society will not take kindly to you, at least this gives them something to talk about other than your social standing.

Miliani helps Crockett get dressed in his own standard clothing as Clib has his staff package up the new formal wear.

Crockett makes his check and notices that Clib is wearing a new pin. It is the new Pioneer badges but the symbol at the top is a needle and thread.

Miliani asks Clib about the new badge. He says that one of the crew of the Pioneer came by to give it to him in exchange for being the sole provider of tailored goods to the ship. Clib agreed to give his highest priority to orders from the Pioneer.

Miliani escorts Crockett with his packages off to the shuttle port to go up to Highport for his afternoon meetings.

1104-352 08:00

Watch change, and no morning meeting. Hmmm...

To Captain A. Solis, and/or Sir Lt G. Sultana, from Standby Pilot
Captain and Chief Pilot,
I may have missed the morning meeting, being closed up on the bridge.
Is there a requirement to ferry crew and visitors, today? Should a flight plan be filed, and what timings are desired? Any assistance you desire for cargo or tours?

Standby Pilot,
Mikhel

No meeting this morning. I expect at least two potential crew to arrive today. They are likely waiting for transport to the Pioneer this morning. Any crew on board should have submitted a request by midnight. Proceed as needed. Captain Solis out.

1104-352 09:00

When he got up to the High Port he checked out his firearm Give it a good looking over checking all the parts to make sure it’s all in order and nothing was unusual. He put it back in his holster, wrapped the belt around it and packed it up in his duffel bag. He then found a nice area to view the ships docking and taking off while he was waiting for his meeting in two hours.

1104-352 11:00

With a cup of coffee on her desk, good enough for lunch at the moment, Athena awaited in her office, a little earlier than usual, this time expecting to be bothered by one, if not both, potential recruits. Surely they'd knock when they arrived?

At the arranged time, Harrison radio for permission to come aboard. As he boarded the transport He introduced himself to the pilot tanking him for the lift and saying he hopes that will be flying together for the foreseeable future.

As the L-T was going to do the hosting of the guest, Mikhel would handle the Pinnace juggling. Mikhel also contacted Eleni to see if anyone was doing lunch, and if there were plans to extend hospitality to the potential new hire. Might as well scare him off, now, before he found out the hard way, when it was too late to jump ship.

To M. Blacke, Torpol Main from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Dear Martin,
I may have missed your interview time, sorry if this is late.
Let me know if you need transport up to the ship.
At your service,
Mikhel

To M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Thank you Mr. Dromah for your kind offer of transport to the Pioneer. I am experiencing unexpected delays in
checking out of the Quasiland Resort. I have reserved a seat on a 1:15pm shuttle to the highport and will
make my way to the Pioneer from there. If you could please offer my apologies to Captain Solis for my delay
I would be most grateful. I expect to arrive at the Pioneer around 1:45pm.
Again, thank you for your very kind offer.
M. Blacke

To Captain Solis from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Captain,
M. Blacke has advised that he is at the mercy of local shuttle schedules, and will be delayed.
If I can, do you wish the Voyager to attempt to expedite transportation?
Mikhel

Lt Sultana met the pinnace at the docking ring of the Pioneer. As the hatch cycled open, he stated, "Welcome aboard the Pioneer, Admiral Dawn." He checked to make sure he recognized the face before continuing with a nod. "Ah, it is you. Thought I remembered the name right. Sir Lt Sultana, of Qevar, pleased to meet you again, sir. If you'll follow me, I'll escort you to the Captain." He holds open the door to the elevator leading down the spoke to the rest of the ring ship.

”Sir Lt Sultana it is yourself great to see after all this time. You’re looking well. How has life been treating you?” Lt Sultan is a little surprised at how little the Admiral has changed since the first time they met a good few years ago.

"Ups and downs, as usual. A couple steps forward, a few steps back. We were able to retrieve the information from that thief that brought me to your command back on Imone, although it took awhile. Thanks again for the intel you were able to provide. It let us narrow down our search area considerably." As the elevator doors closed behind them, the lift descended smoothly towards the main ring of the ship. "Count Askigaak granted me a title a few years later for services rendered to the County. I wasn't a Sir yet back when we met, if you recall. But... well, life happened again, and now I'm out here instead of back there. I'll tell you about it sometime later, if you stick around." The lift slowed to a stop and the door slid back, revealing a wall just a few meters ahead, and a passage running from left to right. Stepping out of the lift, Sir Lt Sultana gestures down the passageway. "This is the main ring of the Pioneer. Keep going in either direction, you'll wind up back here again."

Looking down the passage, Admiral Dawn sees a fairly standard utilitarian spaceship hallway. There are two oddities about the passage: one, that all the doors seem to be on one wall only, rather than on both sides. And two, that the floor curves upward in either direction, vanishing above the ceiling not too far away. Curved walls aren't unusual on space stations, or even ships, but it's rarely the floor. Usually it's the wall or ceiling that is the hull. Spending any amount of time in this ship could lead one to feel like they were always at the bottom of a hill, constantly having to walk uphill to go anywhere, even though gravity was constant everywhere.

"This is the bridge right here. Most of the rooms and labs are that way *pointing one direction down the passage*, and cargo is mostly this way *pointing the other direction*. The Captain's Office is over here. She's not military at all, but for a Dome (scientist) she's pretty disciplined, within what she's willing to be interested in."

Sir Lt Sultana raps on the frame of the Captain's Office to announce their presence, then ushers Admiral Dawn inside.

Once docked Harrison was directed to the captains office. He left his duffel bag outside the door and knocked when invited in he entered stood to attention and salute the captain “Retired admiral Harrison Dawn reporting in pleased to meet you Captain Solis” Harrison Don looked to be about 38 was clean shaven, not physically big but definitely had an air authority about him. You could easily tell that even though he had left the military that the military had not left him.

Athena looks up from a data print out she's reading - clearly something related to some experiment due to the figures, diagrams, and graphics. On the wall behind her are her various diplomas, awards, and other memorabilia that makes it very clear that she has never been in the military. She is fully of the academic world.

"Admiral, please sit," says Athena, gesturing to the chair across from her desk. She takes a sip of coffee as he gets himself settled and pulls up his CV on her data pad for a quick glance. Giving it a thoughtful tap, she prompts, "We do potentially need someone else with piloting experience, but you are aware that we are a lab ship, yes? A bit different from your years with the military. Any particular reason for your interest in this position?"

“Thank you captain” he replies to the offer of the seat and sits himself down. “Firstly thank you for the opportunity to interview to be part of your crew. I am aware of this this is a labship. I may not be custom to but it’s still a ship and that’s what I’ve spent most of my life on . The pioneer has a long history and it’s crew have a good reputation which is more important than the type of ship it is to me. I can indeed pilot have training in sensors and j-drives, so I’m sure you can make use of me on the ship somewhere Ma’am.”

Athena nods, turning off the data pad screen. "I give new crew one jump to prove themselves. After this stop in Torpol, we'll be heading to Drinax to attend an event. I am unsure our course afterwards. If you find employment on here suitable to your needs, we can talk details after the jump. I'll have Jörn send you the employment information and information on the Pioneer. Our former Security Officer updated out SOP before he left. Make sure to give it a look when you have the time. The key points are limited access to the labs. If any non-science crew needs access to the labs, they must inform me. We have strict containment protocols that must be followed. If anything escapes, our goal is to recapture or retain the specimen. We have some valuable species on board and I do NOT want any of you former military to shot first, ask questions later. While we're here in Torpol, you can get yourself familiar with piloting the Voyager. Seek out Lt Sultana or Doctor Mikhel to arrange that. Any questions?"

“Understood Captain hearing you loud and clear. I’ll reach out to Lt Sultana & Doctor Mikhel to learn the ropes of the Voyager And I will look over the SOP ASP. thanks again for, permission to leave.” Athena give him a nod and a wave of her hand. Harrison Dawn stands to attention and salutes the captain and exits the room. Harrison fires off a message enquiring about the voyager. He heads to the common area to store his bag And then makes his way to the engine room and proceeds to check the jump drive and make sure it’s all in working order. Stopping to introduce himself to anyone he meets on the way.

To Lt Sultana & Doctor Mikhe I hope you are well I have been instructed by the captain to seek you out. I’m asking if you would be so kind as to show me the ropes of the Voyager at your earliest convenience I am presently on the Pioneer in the engine room thank you. Harrison Dan out.

To Rannogh Protection Services, Torpol Main from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Dear Red Lightning,
Is everything going OK?
Need a hand with anything?
Let me know if you need transport up to the ship, and give me some time, in advance, to work around the watch schedule.
See you soon,
Mikhel

Torpol Traffic, from Standby Pilot, PSV Pioneer,
Permission for Voyager to transit to Torpol Highport, to pick up a passenger from the 13:15 Lowport Shuttle.
If at all possible, a berth nearest the Lowport shuttle is desirable.
Please cancel any shuttle request for M. M. Blacke going to Pioneer from Highport at 13:30.
Clearance and berth number at your convenience.

Standby Pilot

To M. Blacke, Torpol Main from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
M. Blacke,
Pioneer's pinnace, Voyager, will be at Torpol Highport, next to, or near the Torpol Shuttle when you arrive.
Ask the shuttle crew to confirm Voyager's berth number as they dock.
Make your way to the Voyager, and you can be aboard the Pioneer by 13:30 hrs.

See you soon,
Mikhel

To Harison Dawn, PSV Pioneer from M. Dromah, PSV Pioneer
Ship's Doctor, So-Called, here.
Please refer to me as Mikhel, or Medic.
Sincere apologies for the later reply. Things are getting a bit hectic with the watches and shuttling.
I will get back to you ASAP. If the Captain has accepted you as crew, I would like to do a full work-up on you, and get your medical history, if you have it available. Should you have Imperial Naval Medical Records on chip, and you are willing to provide them, that would be wonderful.
If we don't meet today, as I do the headless chicken dance, I should be in the Med Bay for after dinner consult - 19:00 hrs, or Sick Bay Call tomorrow AM.
Mikhel

To Mikhel Ship's Doctor, PSV Pioneer Ship's Doctor. From H. D grand awn Thanks for reaching out please find attached my last medical report from the Navy it all should be in order if not player me know and I’ll rectify it. I’ll will report to you in the med bay ASP. Dawn out.

Finishing up given the engine an inspection, Harrison cleans himself up and heads to the med bay.

Harison will note the sign on the Med Bay indicating the Ship's Doctor is out, and the call code to contact him. The sign does say the doctor will be back for evening Sick Call at 19:00.

Mikhel gets a brainstorm. Look for medications and health exports to Drinax.

To Sir Lt Sultana, from M. Dromah
Trade history: What gets shipped to Drinax, and by whom? Is there any of it around, and can we (the Pioneer) get some to take to Drinax?
Curry favor, or have an 'Ace in the Hand' for negotiations.

Mikhel

That would be a broker skill check for Sultana.... or one of your two new potential hires as a test for them?

To M Dromah
I haven't checked the markets yet to see what's available, but typically Drinax has a high demand for common industrial and manufactured goods.

Sultana

I didn't roll because this is just general knowledge, not actually brokering deals with merchants yet. No idea if these are actually available or if Drinax would actually want them.

Mikhel checks the watch schedule, and Red Watch is on, so Sultana would be on the bridge. Off Mikhel goes.

Entering the Bridge, "L-T! Yeah. The cargo thing is just an idea. I am thinking of specialty stuff. Small, and very attractive. I've been looking at general info on Drinax, and there isn't much going there. I would like to bring medical things, if you can find a small lot. I don't have a Trade Budget, and we don't have a large cargo hold. Now, please understand that I'm looking for 'legal' drugs, not illicit stuff. Really, if we can somehow bring in something Drinax needs, and we don't try to extort them, we could make some friends. That's where I'm trying to go. Traders usually want to maximize their return. Can we get some stuff, and bring it in 'under market', is my plan." Mikhel pauses.

"We may have to recce the place, and gather intel on this trip, and put a "wish list" together for future trips."

"You've had lunch, before closing up on watch, right? You need me to go get you something?"

Also, I've got to head out to Highport for 13 Hundred to pick up the next victim. Can I ferry the current visitor back?"

Blacke thanked the attendant for the information and made his way to berth 17 to meet the Pinnace sent to take him to the Pioneer. Nearly two hours of lines at the Quasiland resort waiting to check out had delayed him more than he would have liked. And then there was the usual nonsense with downport adminstration to retrieve personal belongings but at least the shuttle to the highport was pleasant. It was good to be off-world again.

As he approaches the terminal at berth 17, Blacke taps his mobile comm to display his travel credentials. Following the prompts on the terminal, he presents his credentials to confirm his ID and waits for the airlock to cycle.

"This should be interesting", he mutters to himself.

The airlock cycles, and Mikhel checks the pressure indicators. Good to go. The Hatch opens, and he looks for the passenger. Mikhel is in his usual coveralls and ship's jacket. The Medikit is still in the stowage bin near the hatch, but he shouldn't need it just to greet a passenger. Seeing a man standing in the access area, Mikhel extends a hand.

"Mister Blacke? I'm Mikhel. I don't stand on any type of formality. I am the Standby Pilot, and sometimes the Ship's Doctor, So-Called. Welcome aboard." Mikhel will give the man a firm hand grip, and then back into the Voyager and indicate that Martin can enter.

Martin will observe a few things, the Player is sure. There are wear marks on the clothes. The coveralls are old. Not thread bare, but close. Even if old, Mikhel's clothes are clean and fit well. The waist of the coveralls has wear marks of a wide belt that probably carries a bit of weight, when worn. Utility belt of some sort. The Ship's Jacket is not much newer, but also worn. There are signs of wear over the right shoulder, and across the chest, and a matching one across the back, as if there is a satchel worn very frequently slung over the right shoulder and hung off the left hip. And looking closer, there are holster marks on the upper right hip and upper thigh of the coveralls. If Martin chooses to scan the compartment as he enters, there will be a stowage bin very near the door, and a rough canvas satchel in it. The satchel has a strap that would be of the correct size for the marks on Mikhel's jacket. There is a prominent "Red Crystal" patch on the outer top flap of the satchel, marking it as a Medikit. And the satchel will coincide with Medikits with which Martin is familiar. Mikhel is a bit over average height, and of slight build.

With a brief smile, Blacke returns the handshake. "Yes. Thank you." He hoists his duffle onto a shoulder and steps onto the ship. With a brief glance he thinks, "Pretty standard pinnace" and moves to the first available seat. After tucking his duffle under his seat and strapping in he retrieves a data pad from it's case and continues reviewing the specifications for a standard lab ship. Not a common vessel in his experience.

Mikhel gives Martin a look-over and tilts his head. Pause.
"I think you'll find the Flight Attendant's attention and hospitality during the brief trip woefully inadequate. Actually, non-existent. The same goes for the in-flight entertainment. If you'd like, the view out the front window gives a much better opportunity to survey the Pioneer on apporach, and you can get a very good look at the ship you are trying to hire onto. It will help familiarize you with the configuration of the two ships you are likely to be piloting, as well. Totally your choice, but pilots usually like the view from the cockpit."

Blacke looks up from his pad. "I'm sorry, what? Oh. Well, no. I'm fine here. Thank you all the same. I'm sure that the hospitality will meet my needs." Blacke returns his attention to the data pad containing the lab ship schematics.

"Right! We'll be docking at the Pioneer in 15, or less."

1104-352 13:30

Mikhel comes out of the cockpit, and grabs his satchel out of the stowage bin.
"M. Blacke, we are docked with the Pioneer. If you'd be so kind as to follow me, I'll take you to the Captain's office. Just a short lift ride to the ring, and a short walk to the office."
Martin will now notice the web belt on Mikhel's waist, and a holster on his right hip. Looking at the butt of the pistol in the holster, he thinks he can make out the signs of a stunner power pack, not a projectile magazine. The hatch opens, and the small foyer for the lift is revealed. Mikhel gives a half-frown.
"The lift is a bit small, so hope you aren't bad with crowding. Thankfully, I'm wiry and not too heavy-set. You could leave the duffle bag here? You won't need it for the interview, and it can be picked up later, depending on your movements after the interview. If you are not fussed, it can be brought to you in a bit?"

Blacke gathers his duffle and follows Mikhel onto the Pioneer. He is dressed in dark cargo pants and a grey sweatshirt. A navy blue windbreaker with the logo of the Quasiland Resort embroidered above the breast pocket is tucked through the strap of the duffle. At the lift, he listens to Mikhel and replies, "If it's all the same to you, I will keep my belongings with me. It's a matter of habit. And no, I am fine. I am very rarely 'fussed'." Blacke grins as he glances down at the weapon on Mikhel's hip.

Mikhel notes the glance at his hip, and thinks, 'Not hospitable, but I carry it everywhere, when off the ship. He'll get to know that. And he'll learn about the other three weapons I always carry, eventually.'
At the opening of the lift when it reaches the bottom of the spoke, Mikhel indicates to the right, briefly opening the iris valve and pointing. "From here, there is a recreational area and then cabins. Further along is the Med Bay. Please drop in, soon, if you decide to stay with us, and I'll do up your medical status."
Mikhel then indicates to the left, "We will be heading this way. Past the Ship's Locker, then into the next section." Mikhel leads the way, and opens the next iris valve. "This is the command section. Cargo Hold (Small), Air/Raft bay next, and we'll be into the Bridge to the Captain's office."

Entering the bridge, Mikhel waves at the watch officer, and knocks on the Captain's office door. When it opens, he introduces the Captain to Martin. "Captain, if you and M. Blacke come to an agreement, ping me, and I will return for M. Blacke." Mikhel turns and leaves.

"Well, Mikhel. Thank you for your very kind assistance today." As the door to the captain's office opens, Blacke nods and says "Hello Captain" and waits patiently in the doorway.

"Martin Blacke? I suppose my delayed reply and your delayed appearance cancel each other out. Take a seat," says Athena, indicating the seat across from her desk. This also means a delay in getting back to the lab, but she does her best not to mention it. A quick and short interview is the goal.

Setting his duffle beside the chair, Blacke sits. He smiles cordially at the captain.

After bringing up his information on the data pad while he situations himself, she prompts, "Your CV checks out. Perhaps Doctor Mikhel could use your help in his ship repair projects during the jump. I believe Lt Sultana is heading up cargo so he may be interested in assistance as well. Our next stop will be Drinax. It sounds like you just want to get off Torpol, though, to go wherever is next. Is there a reason for that? "

"The reason is quite simple, captain. I have lived my entire life in the Torpol cluster. I have spent the last twelve years hauling cargo between Torpol, Clarke, and Blue for the Bureau of Logistics and Supply. Now that I have left that job, I thought it would be good to see what the worlds beyond the cluster might have to offer. I assume this will be the customary one-jump 'trial run' at a standard crew rate of Cr3000 with an option to renew if I like it here and, of course, if you find me suitable. If there is nothing further, I guess I will ask someone to show me to crew quarters. I will try to find Mr. Dromah or Lt. Sultana for duty assignments. Thank you for your time, captain."

"If I find you suitable, and you wish to stay on, we will be having a longer conversation," said Athena, unsure if she was relieved or annoyed at Blacke getting right to the point and ending the interview. It did not cross her mind the irony that, before becoming Captain, she often did the same. "Go seek Doctor Mikhel first for your check up. Dismissed," said Athena, waving him out the door before sending off a quick message.

To Lt Sultana and M Dromah,
As we no longer have a Security Officer, I will leave it to you both to see what more you can find out about the new crew members. One seems open and friendly, the other seems the type to keep to himself. That is no concern as long as they are earning their keep - but make sure they are. Captain Solis out.

Acknowledged, Captain.

Retrieving his duffle, Blacke stands and leaves the captain to her duties. Hopefully Mikhel will be in the medical lab to get this 'check up' over with.

Mikhel had remained on the Bridge to send messages, trying to organize details and acquisitions. Also, awaiting Martin, if he needed a ride back to Highport. When Martin comes out of the office, Mikhel turned to address him. "Where to from here? A ride back to Highport, or can I start your In-Routine for new crew?"

Are we heading for Torpol for tailor stuff?

To Sir Lt Sultana, PSV Pioneer

My old friend sorry we did not have time to catch up earlier I hope you do not think me rude. I am taking you up on your offer to tell me about Count Askigaak granted you a title. Sounds like some grandiose adventure I would love to hear about it and what you have been up to since then.
I have an appointment at 19:00 with the Doctor Mikhel for a medical check up.
How about we get some food after that and catch up.

Harison Dawn

To Adm Harison Dawn

Absolutely fine, no offense taken. By all means, let me know when you're done with your other appointments and we'll chat. I want to hear about your promotion as well, Admiral.

Sir Lt Sultana

1104-352 14:30 - Torpol Highport

Crockett meets with Master Shlito after leaving the shuttle customs area. (Master Shlito)"Mr. Crockett, I hope you had a good day planet side. I have Captain Losthin ready to speak with you at her ship. I can take you there now.

A short walk, a lift down, and the two of them arrive at the docking port for a Far Trader that looks spotless from the docking port. A tall thin woman greets them and invites them into the crew lounge to talk. (Captain Losthin)"It is good to see you again Master Shlito. Mr Crockett, Master Shlito tells me that you looking for work as a spacer. He passed along your credentials and they do seem adequate for what we need on the White Horse. I am going to be short at least one crew when we jump later this week. You have good security and gunnery skills it seems. I need someone who can handle a turret more than I need someone to handle a passenger. You have been on planet here relaxing for only a day or two and you are already anxious to get back to space. Why is that? What happened to your last ride? Are you comfortable with going into Imperium space?

Captain Losthin...I do appreciate you seeing me.. Yes...I'm quite keen to get some challenging work...as you know I've recently completed my 3rd term in Space Marines and feel I'm fairly well equipped to handle the position you've described and would be happy on a route that took us into Imperium space. What can you tell me about your cargo and length of current mission? Oh, and my last ride..... I'm happy to explore that with you if you have some more time for me...Basically I was somewhat assigned to travel on the lab ship- PIONEER now in port and decided it was going to provide the challenges for me I'm looking for...(As I say I'm happy to do more detail later with you...it's not an issue.)

(Captain Losthin)"Short term contracts are something that we are comfortable with on the White Horse. For cargo, I am waiting to see what my broker brings us, that is why we are still here. I anticipate leaving shortly after she secures something for our last few tons of space. We are heading to Arunisiir, by way of Blue. Then back through Torpol to Khusai. We have 60 tons of Ag goods to bring there, waiting in a warehouse on Arunisiir. A six jump contract for you, standard rates for security in port and turret work if needed. Does that fit your need for space again?"

Sounds like what I'd be enthusiastic about for sure Captain Losthin! I'd like to hear back from two other potential opportunities that might be available for me this afternoon first if you don't mind. It's not the money so much as the route you'll be taking...... For reasons I can't discuss too much about right now I'd like to make a quick stop at DRINAX for a few days and I'm thinking that's too much of an inconvenience for the WHITE HORSE. Would it be possible to meet after dinner at 9:00pm here at same location tonight and I'll have an answer for you to this opportunity you've offered?

Before I leave you though right now I have a question for you about DRINAX and their King Oleb.....What do you hear about him? Has the WHITE HORSE had any encounters with his world and his people in recent years either positively or negatively that you could share with me? I have an opportunity to meet him should I visit there and I'm wondering how such a meeting might benefit your trading area and overall stability of the region? I can't say much more about how that has come about, but it does seem like an interesting opportunity given how different their world seems to be from other star systems!

(Captain Losthin)"Drinax would not be on our way to Arunisiir, but we could do that on the way back through to Khusai perhaps if there is a need. Our cargo hold will be full so not certain until we get closer to that point but we can entertain the idea. I have not been to Drinax myself so it would be intriguing to see a new system, one of the few the White Horse has not been to." She pauses "I can wait until you check your other options. I will not be part of a bidding war, you have my offer."

Thank you Captain. I think I could serve aboard the White Horse and be quite happy. However, I owe it to myself to complete my after meetings. I thank you for your understanding and hope be able to return to you around 2100 hrs as they are used to in the marines or 9:00pm as others would call it. With that, I'll take my leave if I might and leave you to your more important matters for the day.

1104-352 16:00 - Torpol Highport

(With direction from concierge, Crockett arrives for appointment with Captain Alito)

Captain, thank you for seeing me again. I'm having second thoughts about your earlier offer of employment aboard your far trader as you travel to OGMAH and beyond. and I thought I'd share with you what happened to my colleagues and myself and the inhabitants of MARDUK when we were last there and see if you have heard similar stories in your travels. I am sharing this news with you as it only happened a few days ago and it involved an unpleasant encounter with raiding ships from apparently OGMAH which was a major factor in my initial hesitancy when you made that initial offer to me. I wonder what you could tell me about some of the unsavory characters that hang out at OGMAH and how you overlook that side of things when you travel there. It would help me quite a bit tonight as I reconsider travelling with you...assuming that offer is still on the table!

(Captain Alito)"Of course there are problems with Oghma, that is why we do not go near the planet. When ever we transit through that system we visit the GeDeCo starport out at the gas giants where they refine the fuel we need. That is why I would have you on the ship, even with the GeDeCo remoteness sometimes you need to fire off a warning shot through someone's bridge. The Florian Route is profitable for the likes of me only by being careful around the edges and traveling with a group. If you don't have the nerve for such things I can understand."

Well Captain...you know it's not a question of "nerve" or lack of with a marine, and especially a star marine....it's just we're trained to get as much intel on a situation as we can before entering an arena and I'd just experienced first hand back on Marduk reason to do some further investigation of the Ogmah area before entertaining the thought of transporting into the lion's den so soon after seeing how undisciplined some of those inhabitants can be at times. I have since learned from other sources and you have just confirmed that the Highport there is administered by GeDeCo and that because of that there is a fairly tight security up there. It's the inhabitants of the lower port I'd like to have you tell me more about if you would? And, while you're at it....I wonder if we could also discuss what you know about the influence of the King of Drinax in these parts? I'm told he has designs about trying to re-instate rule over some of the former zone of control of what was once known as his family's "kingdom"? Do you see any disturbance of stability along this trading route should such a thing occur? Just curious really....

(Captain Alito)"Never go to Oghma actual and try to land. Unless you do not want to come back up off the planet. The GeDeCo Highport is out in the system near the gas giants. Still a bit more dangerous than one would prefer, and as I said Star Marine or not you might be having second thoughts about going there."

(Captain Alito)"For Drinax? Once in a while you hear a rumor about some far off dream of trying to rebuild a Kingdom, but no one could really believe. Planetary bombardments tend to put a damper on grandiose dreams."

I appreciate that insight very much Captain....especially the detail regarding the Off-world stop by Ogmah without actually getting close to the goings on at the Lowport. Are there not the occasional run-ins with the pirate-category I've heard things about from that world?

(Captain Alito)"There are always those foolish enough to attack a merchant ship on the Florian Route. Jump being a bit uncoordinated sometimes if you can hit a caravan quickly before others emerge or if they stray too far away from the group. That is why I offered you the job. A good show of force quickly sends a random raider scurrying for cover.

1104-352 18:30 - Torpol Highport

Master Shlito escorts Crockett through the Highport and to the lifts that lead to the Diplomatic Center. (Shlito)"So Mr Crockett, this is where I leave you. If you need any assistance getting down to the Downport please just comm me.

(Provost Falx)"Hello, Mr James Crockett, Welcome to Torpol. I am Provost Falx, I spoke with one your your shipmates yesterday Mikhel Dromah. Your group did a good service at Marduk and provided some very good information for us. Welcome to dinner. Here, hands Crockett a drink "this is one of our specialties this month. It is a sweet rum with a sea salt rim and a touch of orange bitters. Cheers!" He takes a sip

"I am glad to host you for dinner, please come take a seat, tell me what brings you up here to the Diplomatic Center?"

First Provost Falx I need to say how grateful I am to you Sir for seeing me as I have no diplomatic standing or great cargo to interest you in. I am merely a former marine seeking a new career with a sense of perhaps common opportunity you may well decide is of interest to you and that is primarily why I pushed for this opportunity to meet with you. You may also have been informed that I was seeking passage to Drinax aboard your diplomatic transport in a day or so and that would be correct, but that only becomes of interest should it be in both our interests for me to travel there. Sounds like a riddle of sorts when I say it out loud, but let me explain.

By luck, or misfortune, while on Marduk a few days ago I came across an invitation to attend a New Year's Day Party to be hosted by the King of Drinax and the promise of a personal meeting with him to discuss a project he has in mind. I've come to someone with your status and respect in the world of trade in this region to see if such an opportunity might have benefit to your interests and those of your corporation. It's as simple as that really. I totally realize that this may sound like someone out to make a fast credit or two or to be a trader of information for profit, but I see it more as someone who sees himself as being on the side of improving future opportunities in this region for all of us through cooperation and dedication to a cause of goodness through commerce, spirit of enterprise, and continued sharing of security for all. What say you? Might there be some interest in your party in helping me get to Drinax so that you might eventually learn and benefit from a closer tie in the inner mind of this King?

(Provost Falx)"Mr Crockett, or may I call you James? James," hands Crockett another drink "I am interested in expanding my own sphere of influence of course. Being granted a higher level of Provost would allow me to make bigger and better decisions. Of course, this is not anything new for you if you are moving in such circles to get a personal audience with King Oleb. Falx leads Crockett over to the dinner suite "Trading information for profit is a well recognized transaction. The value of such information does lay in the quality of the lie. He smiles at his turn of phrase, then turns to the steward and indicates for them to bring the meal.

What a galactic sized meal Sir! I'm truly hungry as I've had a busy day. Let me be straight with you. I believe I owe some of my wits to the fact that both my parents were in the corporate world as I was growing up. For some reason I chose the military academy after regular schooling and now I've finished my three terms in the star marines I've chosen to adventure and explore a bit within our region and I somewhat naturally am gravitating to thinking of corporate worlds more than military ones because of that upbringing. Having said that I do possess a trained combat skill and because of that seem to have no difficulty earning my way.

To elaborate a bit on how I ended up with an opportunity to discuss things with this King Olaf, I can tell you that a small group of us were apparently selected somehow and then paid to hear a proposal that King Olaf was looking for people with our skill and experience base to help him expand his influence within the boundaries of the once glorious "Kingdom of Drinax". I can't share much more of that story with you I'm afraid, but it seems to me that there could be some corporate advantages to some entity to benefit from having someone on the inside locked in to that opportunity! There. Not a bit of "lie" in any of that, except I have no proof to back that story up except this embossed invitation to the King's party he is giving on New Year's Day. Perhaps you are attending it as well? [Crockett hands his invitation to Provost Falx.]

If you find this of interest, I welcome you to tell me so and perhaps elaborate a bit on how it could be of benefit to your corporate world?

Meanwhile, I am finding this dinner meal to be quite delicious.

(Provost Falx)"James, handling the gold invite, turning it over in his hands " this looks like a very fancy invitation. I cannot tell if it is real or not, I presume that when you arrive at the floating palace they will be verifying. I do find your beginning thoughts on a corporate relationship to be of some interest in pursuing. I must say though that I am not certain how you would proceed. Do you have some family wealth that you can draw on? Or are you a long lost scion of the Oleb line? A distant cousin coming home? I am always looking for more opportunities to expand our capabilities here at Torpol Highport. What sort of agreement are you proposing?"

No "Agreement" per se at all at this time Provost Falx. I just need transport to Drinax for this meeting right now to hear what their King might have to say and what is basically on his mind into the future. My wish for now is that you merely show enough interest in pursuit of this opportunity enough to get me to Drinax...preferably at no cost when your upcoming transport departs in a couple of days and as your guest. That would be the best I could hope for... Second best would be to merely allow me to travel with you but charge me passage. It's just myself and my travelling crate of combat gear really. As soon as I am briefed on Drinax ...you and I could agree now and plan to meet again...perhaps after dinner on New Year's Day and see what sort of arrangements could be to our mutual advantage. Would that work for you?

With regard your other questions about my own financial standing, I have no family wealth to draw upon. My parents were told by me that I wanted nothing from them but their well wishes as I set forth on my own. First to military academy after schooling, then my marine career, and then to "make it on my own" really with a strong foundation and upbringing behind me sir and only that training and the wits I might have to land on my feet somehow. I must say it was somewhat by fortune of the stars that I acquired this King's party invitation and while I am slowly gathering that while there could be some personal value in pursuit of what the King might offer..... the real value in the minds and aspirations of others could be of even greater to both myself and some kind of greater value to the region.

(Provost Falx)"James, handing back the invitation plaque "I am a cautious gambler. pours another drink for Crockett "and I think this might be one of those moments where my losses would be minimal and my potential wins could be very good. Here is what I will offer you. You will book a passage at the standard basic rate. You will accompany me on our Diplomatic mission to Drinax. As you might suspect the accommodations will be significantly better than that rate would expect. He takes a drink as he watches Crockett's face "Once we arrive at Drinax we will see if this invitation of yours is real. I have never been to the floating palace, from what I understand there will not be a place for you to stay there. So you will be welcome to retain your stateroom on our ship while we are there in system. When we leave to return home you can choose to come with us or depending on the results of your meeting if you have it you will choose to return with us or not. If you do have your meeting and there are opportunities that I can help with, in the interests of Torpol of course, then I will listen to your proposals. Does this seem to be a fair exchange?"

One couldn't hope for a better outcome from this dinner meeting Sir. It's a very fair exchange I feel, and I accept that offer. It is very much appreciated. Hopefully there will be a potential win here for everyone. Hopefully when we conclude here this evening I won't need more of your time before departure. I will need someone available to me to make certain arrangements for the transfer of my cargo in storage by Torpol Security and for making any final arrangements that might be called for prior to departure. Otherwise I'd love to hear a bit about the corporation you run and then I'll say good evening.

[After listening to an overview of the interests of the Provost's corporation, Crockett takes his leave and makes his way to notify Captains Shilito and Alito of his decision to find his way to Drinax afterall and again express his deep appreciation for his earlier meetings with them and their offers to join their crews. They of course understood that he had to do what he had to do and welcomed him to contact them again should an opportunity in his future present itself. He then made his way back to the planetside and the Resort for some well deserved rest. In the morning Day 353 begins for him and his first order of business following a healthy breakfast will be to send a radio message to 'Mikhel' aboard the Pioneer to let him know that his transport to Drinax has been arranged. He will also hopefully make contact on Day 353 with a representative of the Provost's so he can make arrangements for his journey to Drinax including transport of his crate to the loading area for the diplomatic ship as the crate is currently in the care of Torpol Security.

1104-352 19:00 - Pioneer

By the time dinner is over, and clean-up is done, Mikhel will have had time to transfer Harison Dawn's provided records into the Ship's files. Mikhel will check the due dates on any vaccines or see if there are any treatment schedules. What regular check-ups did the service member miss, or skip, and could a scan verify his condition? It looked pretty standard. Any excessive time in Low Berth? Any regen treatments from injuries? Is his biological and actual age aligned? A scan will reveal any huge misalignments. We'll see.

“Doctor Mikhel reporting for my checkup Sir. Pleasure to meet you and how are you on this fine day?”

"Let's get one thing straight, right away. Please call me 'Mikhel', or 'Medic' in an emergency. Sometimes, I'll answer to 'Doc'. I'll even answer to 'Pecker Checker'. But, never, ever, for any reason what so ever, call me 'Sir'. I was never an officer, and where I come from, only the worst, absolutely vilest ration-wasting, oxygen-stealing imitators of sophonts are given the title 'Sir'. Having joined any military as a career choice, with my background, made relations with superiors more than difficult. It will, no doubt, be something we will have to work on, if you are crew. But, if you aren't hung up on ranks and titles, it shouldn't get in the way of being efficient, or even cameraderie."

Link: Mikhel doesn't use 'Sir'

"Sorry about the attitude attack. How would you like to be addressed?"

”Apology not accepted. I was referred to you by the Captain and she called you Doctor Mikhel so that’s what I referred to you as. I’ve only been on the ship less than 12 hours and never have met you before in my life so I use the name that was used by others to address you. Then you attack me over something so silly as this when you could’ve just explain to me your feelings on the matter and then we could’ve progressed from there but instead you chose this action. It’s very clear to see why never made the rank of officer, no self-control and emotions getting the better of you. Aside from all that this is not the way to professionally conduct yourself in any situation.” Harrison pauses and looks around the med lab and then back at the doctor “If you are not the Doctor maybe you should not be in the med lab playing at doctor, also make sure that the captain does not refer to you as “Doctor Mikhel” so this kind of mixup can be avoided in the future. I am not the one with the problem with rank and titles as I don’t fly off the handle at been called a doctor when in the med lad doing Doctor thing.

And Sir as for what to call me as I am not the Senior Medical Officer on the ship I’m just a new crew man on his first day you can call me Harison Dawn. This meeting is over, good day to you Doctor Pecker Checker.” Harison stands to attention and with a cheeky grin salutes Mikhel.

Harison walks out of the MedBay and heads to the mess hall to get some food and may be catch up with Lt Sultana. He thinks to himself one out of 3 interactions with the crew went bad on his first day on it’s not over yet hopefully this is not a sign of things to come but will keep positive outlook. He never stood for such rudeness and disrespect in all his years in the military and he definitely wasn’t going to start today.

Well, that could have gone worse. Not by much. Way to be an asshole, Mikhel. Sad thing is, he has to come back, eventually. And we are stuck in a tin can for seven days, no matter what. Way to let preconceived notions get in the way of dealing fairly with people. He's right, though. Many ways that could have been done better.

Duffle slung over his shoulder, Blacke enters the medical lab.
"Well, Mikhel, it appears that I will be staying on as crew for at least one jump. The captain informs me there there is to be a medical check up of some sort. I assume this will be nothing invasive; no implants, electronic monitoring devices, and so forth?"

"Hey, Martin! Welcome aboard. I usually do a body Mediscan, and check external indicators. The Mediscan takes care of any invasive requirements. As far as I know, unless one of the scientists ask you, there are no implants for crew. Do you have a personal med file available you'd be willing to share, and are you currently undergoing any treatment I should know about?"

Mikhel indicates the bed in the corner, and starts pushing buttons on his Mediscanner.

"So far as I know, I am just your average 34 year old spacer."
Blacke lies down and enjoys a few moments of peace as Mikhel does his work.

It takes a few minutes, but only that. "Well, if the Captain has her way, I won't need this for another six months. Anything you have concerns with? Anything you want me to check out? Otherwise we're done."

"No. No concerns. I will need crew quarters and the captain said that either you or Lt. Sultana would assign duties for me."

"Cabin assignments are up to Eleni, the Science Head, and the L-T. Assigning jobs will also be by the L-T as Chief Pilot, as I understand the organization on the Pioneer. I get to make decisions on Health and Safety subjects. I was double-bunked with our ex-Security Chief, until he left, and depending on who we take aboard, there should be enough cabins for single occupancy, if nobody else wants to travel with us. Do you need anything brought aboard? I could help with that. Likely tomorrow."

"Thank you for the offer but, no. Everything I need is here in this duffle."
Blacke frowns slightly. "Hmm. Eleni. Not a name I've heard thus far. Any idea where I might find this person? I don't mean to take up your valuable time. I just seem to be a bit lost without some guidance to get started here on the ship. Perhaps I should just wait in the common area of the ship."
Blacke once again picks up his duffle and leaves the med lab. Surely someone will get him pointed in a useful direction soon.

(Eleni)"Hello there, You must be Blacke, Martin. Or is that Martin Blacke? There is an extra M there for some reason. I am Eleni Kagaragu, Captain Solis' sort of XO for lack of a better title. I was told that you were joining the Pioneer for a time. You never left the Torpol Cluster huh? I can imagine why you would want to hook up with the Pioneer, lots of traveling, strange new science, fame and sometimes fortune. What sort of science have you done before?" she leads Blacke to a stateroom up close to the bridge.

"Science? No. You must be confused. I am ship's crew. You know engines, electronics, plumbing? Keeping the ship flying."
Entering the stateroom Eleni indicates, Blacke puts down his duffle and stands patiently waiting to see if Eleni has anything more to say.

(Eleni)"That would be very different to have someone here who only does ship maintenance things. Even Doc tried to do that but ended up doing investigations into interesting things. Are you looking for duct spiders too? He is also waiting on some of the results from the very cool ticks and fleas we found on those Oghma raiders back at Marduk. If you are interested in anything in particular I can help you get some of the papers from our researchers. Let Lt Sultana know if you are going to be charging anything to the ship's account while we are in Torpol. She hands Blacke a comm badge "These are the generic ones, we are going to pick up our nice new designs tomorrow. What section do you think you would like? Engineering? Security?"

Blacke stares a moment, trying to decide if the woman is joking. Slowly reaching forward he takes the comm unit and says, "Perhaps I'll just wait for the people in charge to assign me to my duties. I assume they hired me for a reason."
Blacke turns and places the comm unit on the bedside table and sits down. He takes out a data pad and starts scanning through news feeds.
"Let them know I'm ready to get to work when they want me."

(Eleni)"If you have never worked on a working laboratory ship before it can take some getting used to. I am certain the Captain already told you not to go into her lab, or the others research spaces. Some of the researchers can work on very delicate projects, others are just.... messy with their work spaces. It is always good to learn the lay of the land. For your specific duties I would say help make sure we are good for jump, we should be leaving in the next day or three. If she did not tell you, we are heading to Drinax next, and then she will tell us more about where to after that. I have been with the Captain for 48 different systems so far, there will always be something new. Pick what you like to work on around the ship."

Without looking up from his data pad, Blacke says "Thank you for your insights. Now if you wouldn't mind closing the door on your way out."
Tapping on the pad, Blacke focuses his attention on an item about recent Aslan raids in the nearby Clarke system.

1104-352 19:15 Pioneer Mess

Sultana notes the ping on his commpad from Admiral Dawn, at only a few minutes after 1900. He comms a quick set of directions on how to get to the mess room (not big enough to be a hall) and heads that way himself. He's there around the same time Admiral Dawn gets there. "Tea or coffee? How have your meetings gone so far? Yay or nay?"

Hello lieutenant tea would be nice thank you. Meetings went 50-50. I insulted the doctor in our first meeting no one told me not to call doctor live and learn. I was in the engine room for most of the day and the ship looks in tiptop shape she’s well looked after. What trouble have you been getting yourself up to since the last time we talked?

Sultana smiles, leans back against the counter, and sips at his tea, considering where to start. "Well, I was out of the Navy already when we met, so no change there. I spent the years playing at politics in the region. Family stuff, a little cloak and dagger, although not as much as the vids would have you believe. Mostly it was running messages, talking to people, brokering the occasional deal, that sort of thing. Not nearly as glamorous as it sounds. Just like Navy life, come to think of it. Mostly dull routine, until it isn't. Anyways, got a bit lucky a bit over a year ago, grabbed onto a bit of juicy intel and managed to get it back to the right people. Earned me a title as a reward for services provided, and a half-dozen sniper rounds through my car as a warning. Fortunately none of them hit me, but the Count's security didn't have any leads and couldn't really be troubled to provide a protection detail for a small fish like me, so they and I worked out that it was best I just kind of disappear for a while." He gestures around him. "And so here I am. Taking jobs as a taxi driver a couple sectors from home, just playing at tourist as I go on a random walk through the stars. I'm hoping there's not anyone actually after me, that that was a one-time event, but that's the problem with the politics game, you just never know when someone's holding a grudge. There's been no sign of anyone on my trail, but that's no guarantee. I'll just keep on for a little while and head back in a year or so if nothing comes up to keep me out here. This Drinax trip promises to be potentially interesting, though. One can hope."

"So, what about you. What brings an Admiral out here beyond the bounds of the Imperium? I figured they'd have plenty of things for you to do back there."

After dinner and catching up with Lt Sultana Harrison headed off to find the XO to see where his bunk was on the ship.

(Eleni)"Hello again... Admiral? what are we really going to call you? In any case you have the stateroom next to Master Blacke. He seems to be a quiet type."

Thank you Eleni yes it seems very out of place to call me Admiral. You may call me Harris or Mr. Dawn if you want to be formal. This room is very good thank you again. Is Master Blacke a new crew-member?

(Eleni)"Glad I do dislike the military. Crockett was.... ok, a bit hard to deal with but at least he put a good face on trying. Master Blacke is our other new crew member, in addition to you and Ranogh. You will meet him soon too I would guess. There was another person that I know Mikhel was talking with but not sure if he is joining us also. An old retired Scout. He was a passenger with us on our last jump. Ranogh was with us briefly before and he knows the Captain. We will be leaving for Drinax in the next three days at most. So if you have anything you need planet side or want to breathe air that has not been recycled a thousand times this is your last chance to do that. I have been with the Captain for 48 different systems so far, there will always be something new coming at us. We rarely know how long we stay in a system and from what Mikhel, by the way he does not really like Doc that much, said in his research Drinax does not have a great ambiance for surface dwellers."

”No, I’m all done planet side was starting to miss the recycled air. I do understand peoples dislike of the military and i’ll do my best not be too Navy. What military does do some good, It’s not all bad. Much like science some great achievements and progresses then there are some stuff that was probably better left unknown. Again, thank you for showing me the room and I’m sure we’ll catch on our trip. If you need me for anything don’t hesitate to ask. Have a great evening.”

Harrison stores his belongings in the room make sure everything is in its proper place. He then give a knock on the room next door saying “Hello there Master Blacke I just thought I’d introduce myself since it looks like we’re going to be neighbours for a little while. My name is Harrison Dawn I’m a new crew man the same as yourself. please to meet you”

After this Harrison heads to his room where he looks up information on the planet Drinax as that’s the next protocol. And then heads off to sleep.

Without looking up from his data pad Blacke thinks, "That was a bit odd. Nice to not have to talk but a bit odd."
